Why not give one share of a long term growth stock, i.e. Disney or Home Depot?
Also open a Dividend Reinvestment Plan to purchase additional shares with dividends received.
You will be laying a cornerstone of his financial future.

I just give cash and don't worry about it. If you want to make it a little more difficult to blow, write a check.

Over the years, when we've had nieces and nephews graduating from high school, we gave them a fresh $100.00 bill in a card. We wanted them to enjoy it, and spend it on whatever their heart desires. I don't agonize over such things.

Is he 18? If so just buy him a 10/22. Problem solved and the best $200 you can spend Smile

In all seriousness maybe ask his mom what needs he has. Maybe school needs. Is he going to college? See if that schools book store is through Barnes and Nobles. Texts books aren't cheap these days.

Simillarly, I still have the 1oz. silver buffalo coin that was given to me by a friend of the family for my graduation.

It is the only gift from then that I still have, and I still remember the givers name.

If those sort of things aren't a factor, then I'm in the give him cash or a gift card camp.

This was sort of my thinking. Maybe a little selfish of me, but I wanted to give him something he might hold on to and remember me someday. I have been close to his mother for many years and have known him since birth, so I was hoping for something a bit special.
I'm not sure how well a 10/22 would go over, but I like that idea.

Best answer. Too many guys here forget what it's like to be 18 years old.
