I went to the Hunt Property to check everything. A family of squirrels has taken up residency in one of the box stands. I chased them off and swept out the stand so their nest is now gone.
I am looking for suggestions on how to keep them out and how to get rid of the smell. This is a box stand on Hunt property and it is not feasible to seal it off completely and prevent reentry Rather, I’m hoping there is something that I can leave in the stand that they don’t like that will serve as a repellent.

My brother's place was overrun by the Squirrel Tribe, causing much damage to buildings, wiring & various home structures.
Great results with this:
peanut butter on a pine cone seemed to be a great dinner invitation

I would think that a dusting of cayenne pepper should do the trick. My wife bags spices at work and everyone hates the cayenne. It gets on your skin and it burns.
That said, it may not be the best deterrent if you will be spending a lot of time there as well.

I like suppressed 22LR but that can take some time and attention.
Traps are great, just have a large bucket full of water nearby to finish them off with. I have had a couple of rats on the property messing with the garbage and this has made quick work of them.

Put Barbra Streisand's 'The Way We Were' on a continuous loop player. That will keep them out because everyone knows that squirrels love 'People'.

If you don't mind using a kill trap, a 110 conibear set up over the entry point will work well.
If you want to use a live trap peanut butter and birdseed works well but then you have to take the tree rat far enough away so that it doesn't come back.
Fox urine around the tree or the outside of the stand or cat turds, they avoid predators and don't like the smell of them. I used to sprinkle cat crunchies near my tomatoes to keep them away.

I think this may be overkill, but i think it would be effective.

It might be worth leaving them in there as long as they are not destructive. Any odor based deterrent might also repeal the deer. The squirrel smell might be a natural cover scent.

I don't know guys. Kill one, and 5,000 show up for the funeral.
