I have been a Den Leader in my son's Cub Scout Pack for the last 4 years, assuming the main role half way through his Bear year. The Den was larger than many, varying from 16-24 Scouts, depending on when one made the measurement, but always a good 15+ active Scouts. I was not the sole leader, I had fantastic help from 3 other official leaders, plus a couple of very active parents - all in all 6 Wood Badge trained leaders. This past weekend, we held our Arrow Of Light ceremony and Cross Over before a crowd of about 200 at my last Cub camp out ever. Sixteen Scouts earned the AOL and crossed over to 4 different Scouts BSA Troops, all this preceded by my wife getting her Wood Badge beads in an earlier ceremony. The ceremonies went off perfectly, though the pollen must have been thick, because I did choke up a bit as I was recognizing their accomplishments and sending them off to their future Scout homes. Over the last 2 years, our leadership team delivered for the Scouts in my den, in addition to the regular Pack and Den events: 1) Two Summer Resident camp experiences at BSA Camps 2) Two Webelos-only camp outs run like Boy Scout camp outs each earning several pins. 3) A first-ever (for our Pack) AOL-only wilderness survival camp out focused on bushcraft and primitive camping skills. The Den parents got together and purchased hand-made custom wooden clocks with our Unit number, year, name, leader position, and Cub Scout logo engraved on the face for each of the Den Leaders. I did not expect such a display, and I admit, there were times I was not sure the parents had any idea just how much effort the leaders put into the program, so it really touched me that they went to that effort and expense. My son, wife, and I crossed over the rope bridge to an outstanding Troop, where I will become an Assistant Scoutmaster and Merit Badge Councilor. Congrats! I attended my first Blue & Gold Banquet in some 30 years with our Tiger son last Friday. I think we had 4 or 5 Webelos II cross over, but from the looks of the slide show, it looks like we picked a pretty active Pack to join. | |||

Per Scout... The OA Chapters do the AOL and Crossover ceremonies in Atlanta. I kinda like it when Packs come up with their own traditions. When you get a chance do consider Woodbadge. I have seen a push to get more Cub Leaders to WB in our District/Council and I see those Adults are better able to make the Cub to Scouts transition. Not a guarantee for success but definitely a great tool to have. And have fun. Marc S. Congrats to you and your son as well as your wife on completing her ticket. My son crossed over on Saturday night and had his first troop meeting last night. He purposely chose a smaller troop from our town. Only about 18-20 boys but they said they have commitments from about 8 more Webelos Over the next few weeks so hopefully a bunch of boys his age can work up the ranks together. | |||

Congratulations! I am just a lowly ASM for my son's patrol but we have a good time with all the activities. Congratulations to your wife! Wood badge is a pretty awesome achievement. Great job to you, your wife and your Pack; a lot of achievements rolled up into one. You failed to mention what Wood Badge patrols you or your wife are a part of. I'm an Eagle, when through the course in 2012. I've stepped away from our Troop now (6 1/2 yrs as ASM, 1 yr as SM). I'm staying involved at the District and Council levels now. When asked, I help train the new leader courses, and at the Council level I'm on the STEM committee and the Shooting Sports committee. Kudos to those Sigforum members who volunteer their time to Scouting; I commend you. | |||

Excellent job! I am DL for Tigers and Wolves as well as Pack treasurer. We had our B & G banquet last week. 12 Scouts left the Pack as Arrows and 8 are continuing on to 2 troops. It can be a lot of work, but worth it, IMO. Our Pack is mid-sized, about 50 scouts. Each of my dens is 6 kids. It is frustrating that I have to lead 2 dens, and parents won't step up. However I ask them to lead 2 den meetings each. We meet as a den twice per month, and once for Pack meetings. I am prepping for Howling at the Moon right now. I have already decided I am only leading 1 den next year. Good on you for doing something your kids will remember for the rest of their lives. We are lucky to have a gentleman in our area called JC Bear. For a fee he performs a ceremony the kids really enjoy. He dresses up in a frontiersman's outfit and tells stories about Scouts. We've used him the past 3 years. Not our ceremony, but an example is below. It's an excellent time. His ceremony is about 30 minutes or so, and here's a small portion. | |||

Thank you for all your dedication, you can't even imagine the ways in which you're shaping the futures of so many of those scouts. I am always heartened by the generosity and dedication of true Scouters. My former pack was over 100 Scouts, which makes it a different sort of organization. Our new Troop is 50 Scouts, with 16 working on Eagle projects, so basic Troop activities are more typically 35 Scouts. The Scoutmaster puts a big emphasis on a robust outdoor program, which is very attractive to my son. It's great you have JC Bear. We need more good story tellers, and the kids love it.
