I've read the collective advice about different things here and am impressed. Now I could use some.
The wife's birthday (big 60) is coming up. She wants a practical gift. An electric can opener. She is getting arthritis in her hands and wrist and it's getting more painful. I will not buy the $10 special at Walmart; I want something that will hold up for at least a few years with good customer service behind it.
Thanks for any advice, this woman loves to cook and my ever growing gut is proof she's good at it.

If you have room in the kitchen have you thought about a commercial style hand crank type?

Best solution - do both (1) high quality can opener and (2) something really special.

Along with the can opener, if she is a wine drinker, get her an electric cork screw.
My mom's arthritis has gotton worse and her rechargeable cork screw gets used more then she should admitt.

I do get where you're coming from. Today is our 40th anniversary. We talked all year about what to do. We settled on a nice restaurant for lunch. Last Christmas we got a nice coffeemaker to share.

At some point, stuff matters a lot less.

Ive had this one ~8 years works well. It unrolls the lid seal, no sharp edges.
Since the no part of the opener touches the can contents it doesn't get gunked up like ones that cut the lid off.

Its not expensive, so leaves budget for the "real gift".

I have one of these and they work great, except for larger cans such as 28oz enchilada cans. The cutter wheel is recessed just far enough that it doesn't make a full depth cut on the larger dia. can making a 2nd pass mandatory and then it's still difficult to remove the lid.

So, not having ever heard of this Smooth Touch I checked it out on amazon.

4.7 stars out of 7,287 reviews.

My wife has a Cutco can opener, we have been very pleased with it, and you can't beat Cutco's free service. They really stand behind their products.

We had grilled cat last night. Didn't matter one damned bit.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check out the electric ones. Yes, her hands and wrists are that bad.

I fell into that "practical gift" trap once. My suggestion, contact David Troung in addition to any can opener,

What about a boring practical can opener and then a special gun with happy birthday spelled out in bullets? Surely she'd like that, right? Who wouldnt.

My advice, like any good advice, is based on practical experience (both positive and, of course, negative). There is what "they" are asking for and what they are really asking for. Meet both the immediate practical need and the far more important emotional / relationship need.
