Officer killed, second officer critical after shooting in Westerville

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- Westerville Police are investigating after an officer was shot and killed Saturday afternoon.

It happened just before 1 p.m. in the 300 block of Crosswind Drive.

One officer was killed in the shooting and another is in critical condition, according to 10TV sources. The suspect is in custody.

The City of Westerville posted on Twitter, "We are deeply saddened to report that one of our officers has been killed in the line of duty. Please continue to follow back for more information."

Very sad.

We always said if we were to move back to the Central OH region, Westerville is where we would live and work.

Through the years, I have met many from that Dept when I would travel to Ohio for training.

I did a lot of work in that area back when I was in the Laborers Union.

I have no answer to this but LEO deaths were down by over 10% in 2017.

Officials have identified the officers as Officer Anthony Morelli and Officer Eric Joering. LODD

A friend was a LEO in a major US city. He tells me that they were taught that when on a call and their squad car comes to a stop, they throw the car in gear and move as quickly as possible to a less vulnerable position.

When I hear about LEOs being shot when they show up, I always wonder if they parked too close or lingered too long at the vehicle. RIP these two Ohio officers.

Any other details other than 9-1-1 hangup?

Any word on who the perp was?

I cant help but think we are losing more cops because they are reluctant to quickly defend themselves, give the current anti-cop sentiment now.
And I think that more people are willing to fire on police now than in years past.

You can over think that stuff to death. We try and park a couple of homes away. Any rifle can easily make that simple shot. With a 911 hangup eventually we end up at the door. Doors and modern front porches are generally pretty tight areas and allow for little room for people to stand or find protection from what could come through the door. The bad guys always get the first shot and surprise is a bitch. Nature of the business. Prayers for my brothers in blue.

If someone wants to shoot a cop, they can.

Only things that will save the officer are body armor and luck, combined with quick transport to a good hospital and a tourniquet if it's an extremity bleed.

Even the most tactically sound person can be taken by surprise.

Are there really more cops being killed, or are we just being better informed about the deaths?

Terrible. RIP officers.

They are the first two officers Westerville has lost in the line of duty. On local news coverage it appears the entire community is mourning. Maybe there's some civility in suburban Columbus.

What a tragedy, this seems to be happening more often lately. RIP

Very sad... I lived in Westerville some years ago and it was a wonderful American small town with zero crime. If it can happen there it can happen anywhere.

I grew up in Westerville. It is suburban America at its finest. Even as a teenager, the cops in Westerville were great. I can't tell you how many house parties they showed up at and were always professional and understanding of what high school and college kids like to do. The year I turned 21, I had a huge house party, they showed up at 11:00 because of the asshole neighbor that called them for a noise complaint. They ended up hanging out for about 30 minutes and having some food and non alcoholic beverages. Great group of people.
