One night in Helena, MT where to stay
Im doing a motorcycle vacation to Montana and will be spending one night in Helena so looking for recommendations where to stay. It's only one night but Im not looking to stay in the most expensive place nor the cheapest. Just something nic and clean between most expensive and cheapest.

If you get to Missoula the Smokejumper Visitor Center is well worth a tour.

If you get to Missoula - Take a scoot on Hwy 12 into Idaho and stop for a soak at Jerry Johnsons Hot Spring.

Some of the best curvy scenic pavement you'll every ride on.

You can thank me later.

The plan is to spend 7 days in Whitefish and then pass through Missoula on our way to Kooskia via Hwy 12, then west to Lewiston and south to Jospeh, OR where we'll spend two days before heading back east to Stanley for two nights, then on to Emigrant for 7 days exploring Yellowstone and Grand Tetons. I'll be on my BMW R1300GSA and my riding buddy is on a Harley.

Thanks for the tip but I don't think we'll have time to check it out.

And with the center-line rumble strips, some of the most miserable. Wink

Beautiful country back there, but I hate driving that road. Whoever came up with the center-line rumble strip idea needs to be beaten about the head and neck with a sack of doorknobs.

OP: Can't help with the motel recommendation down there, but I'd say that any of the chains should be fine.

Sorry I can't help with a suggestion because I can't recall where I stayed around there. It was on the eastern outskirt of Helena because I recall riding into town for breakfast and waiting in line for the restaurant to open.

You'll have a good time riding out there, post some pics when you get back.

From Helena I rode up to Whitefish, based there at a campground for two nights, then rode around that area on little roads and over to Idaho over the next 2 days.

No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

Can't help you down in Helena, don't ever go down there, heck I don't even go to Missoula.

But, if you want to meet up or need any help when you get to the Flathead, let me know.

Heck, I have a spare bedroom if you need a place.

I really appreciate the offer, very, very generous of you but we have a condo in Whitefish where we'll be staying for 7 days.

I can’t help with hotel suggestions but wanted to recommend going to Taco Treat for some tacos. Probably the best fast food taco place there is. Every time I go back home to Great Falls it’s one of the three “must have” places I go to eat. Taco Treat, El Comodor and Howard’s Pizza. I think back in the day Howard’s had a location in either Missoula or Helena but I just checked and it looks like they are all in Great Falls now.

I have stayed at the Best Western Great Northern several times nice hotel. Great restaurants nearby and some city sites an easy walk away.

Problem solved :-) I did a google search of military installations and a small NG base, FT Harrison, is located just outside of Helana and as a retiree I'm eligible to stray there. Thanks for everyone's suggestions and input, much appreciated.

Bring your passport. If you run out of things to do in Whitefish take a day trip up to Waterton Lakes, AB. Absolutely gorgeous up there. If you make it up there stop and have lunch at Wieners of Waterton. There is a cruise you can take down the 8 mile long glacial fed Waterton Lake and visit Goat Haunt in Glacier National Park on the US side. There is also the historic Prince of Wales hotel you can visit.

Unfortunately I don't have a passport so can't visit Canada. We're definitely planning to visit Glacier so the Goat Haunt will be added to the itinerary.

Goat Haunt is only assessable from the Canadian side, unless you're ready to hike 20+ mountainous miles.

But if you're going to Glacier I can recommend a place for dinner. Check out the Cattle Baron Supper Club in Babb, MT. It's north of the eastern entrance to the Going to the Sun Road.

I definitely won't be hiking 20 miles I did enough of that in the Army so no Goat Haunt for me on this trip :-(. I will checkout the Cattle Baron Supper Club. Thanks
