My wife received a package with awards for the Girl Scout troop she co-leads. The plastic package was torn and several items had fallen out, approx $25 dollars worth of award pins. Most of the patches managed to stay in the bag. The postal worker said she marked the package as damaged in the system so we could file a claim, but when my wife tried online it said it doesnt qualify. I dont think it was sent via Priority/insured. Does this mean shes SOL or do we have other options? The items were originally sent UPS surepost but transferred to USPS, so UPS says its on USPS since they were the final carrier. I’d have her contact whoever packaged the stuff inadequately and ask for replacements. Postal insurance is virtually worthless anyway, in my experience. Really not hardly worth spending money on.

How much time, effort, and aggravation does $25 pay for—assuming it can ever be recouped? It also seems like you’ve explored the obvious options already, except, perhaps, contacting the original shipper. Sometimes they will recognize and admit having contributed to the problem. ► 6.4/93.6 “ Enlightenment is man’s emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one’s own understanding without another’s guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one’s own mind without another’s guidance.” — Immanuel Kant

It was shipped in one of those sealed white generic plastic bags. I havent had too many issues with those in the past, but this one looks like a great white got a hold of it. My experience with getting a claim paid by USPS was less than fruitful. Good luck medic451, you'll be in for a ride. I bought a set of night sights for a P220 from Ebay. The package showed as delivered (scanned) but when I got home it was no where to be found. Several days later I was home when mail was delivered and saw the postal person. I inquired about the tracking and he explained to me to call a number that he gave me and have them check the GPS of the package where it was delivered. Long story short, the package was delivered around the corner from me but wouldn't tell me where. They tried to retrieve the package but were not successful(the other house said they didn't receive the package.) I was given a number to call to file a claim and I finally gave up after getting an endless amount of run around by the USPS people. Hopefully you'll have better luck than me medic451.

UPS insures all of their packages I believe. Its not your fault they chose to give it to USPS for the final leg. That was their decision. I would argue that you specifically went with UPS to avoid the post office.
