I bought my wife a Nest smart thermostat this last Christmas, easy to set up including the C wire for power, easy operation

From the beginning it would go "offline" from her app, still connected to wifi. Tried everything, updating app, checked and rechecked all settings. It might make it 24 hours before going offline. The only fix is restarting the Nest, still goes offline pretty quick. She didn't complain much and I kind of forgot about it.

I come home today and it's like a freakin sauna in the house. I was worried my AC system went out, nope, nest set at 79. She's at Disney with the kids, she says it's offline, as always.

All I could find online is what looks like a three month warranty, googles online help/warranty site blows. My tech savvy friend says maybe it's a faulty network card so I ordered another Nest. If it works, great. If it doesn't I will return it with a quickness and look at another brand

BTW, it's only hooked up to her app, no Alexa or any other listening devices

What smart thermostat are y'all using?

We have a Nest that’s been working great since we moved in. I did have an issue with a Nest in the past that didn’t play well with a heat pump unit.

In your case does she possibly have a geo-fence enabled? If she’s (her phone at least) outside a certain area it sees that as her not being home and goes into “Away” mode that allows a higher and lower threshold on the desired temp. Since he app shows it offline I’m not sure if that’d be the case though.

I use a nest. Never got the app for it. I just use it like a regular thermostat. It was super easy to install and set up without. Just gotta use the one button (push in the entire device) and the dial.

I had version 1 in my last house for 5-7 years with no problems. I ran both heat and A/C. We just moved into a home with 3 A/C units and I put a Nest on each one of them - Version 3. I set the temp at different temps over the course of a day. Don't need the bedroom/bath at 76 during the day when we are in the living area and visa-versa.

Incidentally, Costco has these on sale now for $199 on line with a remote sensor.

Nest is geo fenced to her phone, automatically putting your house into econo mode. It works thinking only your wife is living at the house. Have your wife take geo fence off while she is in Florida. Your phone needs to be able to control the t stat.

I've run Ecobee T-stats and I love them. No issues similar to what you are facing and a very nice UI.

Nest was great when they came out. Since google took them over TERRIBLE.

You all may remember the saga I posted of being on the phone with google support FOR OVER 8 HOURS just to get one swapped out under warranty.

We ditched ALL of the NEST thermostats (Home, wife's business, and vacation home) and replaced them with a Sensi thermostat. I much prefer it.

I will mention this to her

Does this also make it go offline constantly to where she can't control the Nest?

She is the only one with the app, I don't mess with it usually

The Nest is either having a hardware problem or is on the edge of the WiFi range.
If the WiFi is being maxed out could be losing its connection.

I have a couple of Honeywell Home T9s

and a Honeywell Home RTH9585WF1004 Wi-Fi Smart Color Thermostats.

They all work fine but they use two different software programs.

The first uses Resideo home and the second uses Honeywell TOC.

The T9 has room sensors that can help even out the temps when there is only one zone on a floor.

I have not had any problems with either.

I”ve had a first gen Nest for about 8 years and I’m with most of the others in that it’s geo fenced to her phone. Great little tool in that when I left for work it went to eco mode which I think is around 79 for the high then would cool down the place before I returned in the afternoon. I turned the feature off when I began working from home naturally.

You shouldn’t have problems with the app going offline and not returning unless the unit is off the wifi for more than 2 hrs.

You need to ensure the 24 volt wire is connected in the blower unit.

Mine didn't work until I got the red power in wire hot.

As referenced by swampdog, make sure your t-stat is not thinking "away" when you are actually home. I sometimes have to approach mine during weekdays when I am home to get it to tell the A/C to get to work. Check your Eco/Min/Max settings, and it may be a good idea to put the app on all phones to be monitored for homw/away status (and have Location services activated for the phone).

I have also seen a dirty air filter screw things up.

Agree have the nest, from time to time I do have to walk down the hall past it or it will go into ECO mode after sensing no activity in the home.

Check the app settings, it's most likely that and not a hard wire setting (barring some poor connection or failing part) that is causing it to shut down.

Mine is in a hallway that we don't have a ton of traffic in so that happens from time to time during the weekdays when it's set to reduce energy use.
