Tesla's stock is up 230% since I bought it. I was never totally sold on their cars but was excited about the battery technology. Looks really good so far.

I think you are missing the point. When one makes a case that a particular stock might be a poor candidate to short, that particular statement does not mean that those companies are good long investments.

You are correct, I assumed that your position stating that it was foolish to short tesla was an indication that you thought it was a good choice to go long. That was a leap that I should not have made. Again, I wish all tesla investors the best, no matter which side they fall on.

Sort of. Tesla still got $3,000,000,000 from that deal. It does put them at a competitive disadvantage to manufacturers that haven't used up the credit. The first 200,000 EVs a manufacturer sells are eligible for up to a $7,500 tax credit based on battery size. After that, the next two quarters of sales are eligible for 50% of the credit and the next two quarters at 25% of the credit. I believe there is no limit on number of cars sold in the second and third phases.

Options are tough because you not only have to be right on the direction, you have to have the timing right too. Nothing more frustration than watching a company’s stock price absolutely go through the roof after the calls you bought expire worthless. Or on the other side watching the market finally wake up and the price of a company you bought puts on fall through the floor on its way to China a few days after your puts expire worthless.

At least with a long equity position in a profitable business you can hold on if the market is unreasonably undervaluing the company. (This is not something I’d look to do with TSLA.)

Maybe we can return to a bit of reality? Anyone gazing into their crystal ball and telling you Tesla will be a huge success (or failure) is either delusional or a con man. Tesla is treading the same water today they have been for the past few years. Their financials are some of the most questionable (I might even assert bordering on dishonest) I've ever seen. There is no correlation whatsoever between their stock price and their asset base, and when 'real' accounting is applied to their financials, they have never posted a profit, nor are they likely to any time in the near future given their enormous debt.

It's still way too early to predict anything with a measure of accuracy about Tesla's future.

Being here in the belly of the beast and knowing many Tesla fanboys and owners and several employees, I have few opinions. I think this is a textbook short squeeze driving the price higher and crushing the shorts. Will be studied in finance classes for years. Personally I would never short a stock, just don’t have the guts. Tesla is bragging about 500k deliveries ? GM sells that many every 3 weeks. Definitely interesting times.

The Model 3 is a great value and just became Europe’s 3rd most popular car in its first year behind the perennial Golf and Clio small hatchbacks. They also have a less expensive crossover coming out this year so they should have another strong year.

People always compare them to Ford for some reason but there are industry insider saying that Ford will claim bankruptcy in the near future right along with Nissan.

Europe heavily subsidizes Teslas sold. In some countries I have read about (Norway was one) the new vehicle sales tax is heaps cheaper on an EV than ICE.

In some ways a Tesla is “that” car amongst the younger crowd. I remember when it was a G35, a BMW 3 Series, Audi A3/A4, entry level Benz. It shifts but it’s definitely Tesla these days. I’ve always called these vehicles the current in or image vehicle and it definitely is, among the younger gens, such as millennials and Gen Y.

Lucky for the world I’m not an investment banker. This was my prediction two years ago. Not Toyota but perhaps someone without a strong battery tech division such as Ford or GM. When VW got jammed up in the diesel scandal and had to fast forward their hybrid models, again, I thought takeover time. Nope. My crystal ball is all cloudy.

Why would an automaker buy Tesla? What does Tesla do that another automaker can't easily replicate for tens of billions of dollars less than Tesla's current valuation?

Other automakers are accountable to their shareholders and would have a hard time explaining such an acquisition.

No one would buy it for tens of billion because it’s overvalued. If the price was more realistic then it could be a target. The technology has value and the high-end customer base has value. People that own these cars love ‘em. Think Chevy Volt vs Tesla.

At $300 a share, TSLA is a crazy buy (as in, you'd have to be crazy), at $500 (and up) TSLA is insane. I can't tell you when the stock price will crash, but it will. Big! No question.
