I eat almonds and fruit all morning. Basically, as much as I want. Half a chicken and salad or vegetables for lunch and a protein and vegetable for dinner. I stay pretty lean on that diet but it still gets more difficult every year, unfortunately.

There are all kinds of diets. The trick is staying with one. Find one that you can live with and works with any medical issues you may have.

I've been doing a low carb diet and exercising for a few weeks now. It definitely works. Now if I can prevent from any old injuries surfacing with the exercise. My goal weights 3 times a week and cardio at least three times a week. Did 5 days of cardio this past week. Stairmaster and a bike ride today.

My wife does weight watchers and does well on it. She was not real heavy, but looks good now since dropping a little over 30lbs.

You diet looks very healthy. Easy tweek, skip the fruit in the am and have an egg(s) or a protein with the almonds. Have the fruit for a snack, preferably after exercise.

Carbs first thing in the morning is probably the worst timing for them, post exercise is the best, they replenish glycogen stores.

I find that a good reliable scale is an excellent tool for weight management. Perhaps more for weight maintenance than for serious weight reduction. The algorithm is so simple. I weigh myself every morning. If I'm over my target weight, it's diet time. My choice of scale is the SECA 876.

Generally speaking, barring an endocrine problem, the formula for losing weight is calories out > calories in. That part ain't rocket surgery.

Leaning a bit more towards rocket surgery is the endocrine issue and what causes it. New evidence is showing that food additives and sundry chemicals that we are unwittingly exposed to every day are causing a degree of estrogen dominance which is helping to cause the obesity epidemic. Plenty of information on endocrine disruptors on the interwebs. It's pretty scary.

Eat organic and avoid plastics (particularly those containing BPA) for a good start.

I would also caution anyone from deliberately inducing ketoacidosis. It's not really a good idea.

Forgive the long post, I haven't really talked about this much- was considering making my own topic, but I'm not too into self-promotion. So far I've been a "Never-Facebooker" too, I've always preferred not calling attention to myself.

OUR key has been to track everything that goes in the food hole, staying below our calorie "goal" for the day, amd becoming more active.

We've taken up a program called Strikefit at our son's dojo- it's a cross between Krav and cardio- kickboxing- and it's done wonders. The key is to not deprive yourself of food, but to make effective changes in what you put into yourself, and hit the exercise as hard as you are comfortable with. I chow on veggies and fruits more than processed crap like I used to.

My wife's down 35 pounds and I am down just over 45 from this. Since May 1 of this year. I just turned 40, and am enjoying this success even though I am awaiting surgery for arthritis, patellar crepitus, and a badly torn meniscus in my right knee. I started at 280.4#. If I can do it, I believe many others can too.

I'm forever grateful to ABD mansfield, MA and Sensei Burns and crew for looking the other way while I wince my way through some of the program, and for helping us believe in ourselves.

We use the My Fitness Pal app to track intake, exercise, sleep, and weight. They have a nice setting for goals, so they help guide intake levels and such.

Proof's in the pudding. Chubby photo was April 24, 2017, thinner photo was a couple weeks ago.

I'd be wary of a "diet" that offered a seminar in a fancy place... it's got to be a lifestyle change more than a short-term thing, IMHO.

Good luck on your journey!

Apples and oranges here.

Ketoacidosis refers to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and is a complication of type 1 diabetes mellitus. It’s a life-threatening condition resulting from dangerously high levels of ketones and blood sugar. This combination makes your blood too acidic, which can change the normal functioning of internal organs like your liver and kidneys. It’s critical that you get prompt treatment.

Ketosis, to put it simply, is the state in which you burn fat for fuel. The human body isn’t stupid, it will burn what it has in most abundance that yields the most energy for its volume. Carbs (some) burn up quick but are packed with intense fuel that yield large bursts of energy. Compare this to an energy drink that a lot of modern culture seems to adore. Fat and protein burn slowly and allow a steady stream of energy; your energy levels won’t soon crash because your body can’t get rid of it near as fast as carbohydrates.

And not only drop the pounds but actually look good and feel healthy.

I despise atkins. Frankly I despise all "diets." The formula for losing fat and inches (or pounds if you prefer) is about as plain and obvious as it can be.

Interesting discussion on what we should eat, comparing the calories in/calories out v. atkins-type diets:

Same. Diets are fads. It's lifestyle change that is needed. We all know what to eat and what not to eat. I think the biggest challenges for people with food are the same for an alcoholic or addicted to drugs person. First you must ack you have eating problems. Either eating the wrong foods, eating too much food (portions too large), or both. It doesn't help that most are overworked, and they put a crack house (fast food joint) on every corner imaginable. Tired, don't want to cook, or don't have time to cook, = bad deal. But they have salads everywhere and you can build up a list of certain food items at every imaginable place, whether restaurant or fast food joint. Combo meals and the sack life will kill you.

The other issues are alcohol and soda.

It's a whole scale change that is necessary. First, don't eat fast food. Limit those places to once per week. Buy some tupperware, or brown bag it. When I leave for work, I have a soft igloo with breakfast, lunch, and pre gym snack (protein/fruit). At night, dinner, I cook things that are fast to cook. I'll bake a chicken breast and make a salad, or grill a tilapia and some pineapple with some brown rice. I eat a lot of the same things very frequently. I eat a lot of fruit especially the super fruits that are loaded with antioxidants, a lot of protein via fish, chicken, and protein bars/shakes. Oatmeal everyday, eggs everyday, basically honed my diet down to what I enjoy eating that is healthy, quick to prepare, and manageable. I save a lot of money skipping the restaurant life. Together with a lifting/cardio regiment, I feel like I'm in my 20's. I get questions from younger folks at the gym a lot, as well as people in my age group. I tell them all the same thing, diets are fads, make a life change. As far as the gym, come in there and attack, don't loaf. At the end of the day, hard work is hard work, and is what is necessary. What you eat will determine your weight. Working out or exercise will determine how you look. Being fit, slim, with some muscle on you for strength, not looks, feels better than any food tastes. Overweight = your organs overweight, decreased life expectancy, decreased mobility as you age, and your wallet. Not being healthy will cost you $$$ in doctors visits, mess, and a big pain in your ass and wallet. Death, money, one or both should scare the hell out of you at some point and kick you in your ass. I want to go out with my boots on.

What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

I was desperate enough to try Ideal Protein earlier this year. I had lost about 60lbs off of my heaviest over the last 5 years. I was frustrated at my extended plateau and saw the flyer at my Doctors office. I had just been told that my A1C was getting too high. I signed up and paid my money.

I went to the first meeting and got my overpriced processed junk food. I stayed on the program for a little less than two weeks (which was plenty long enough to realize that there was not magic in their pouches of nasty food). Most of the food is soy based processed stuff...

I lost weight. I was logging all of my intake. I was eating about 1200-1500 calories per day. (I am a giant, so I can lose weight on 2400 calories per day). When salesperson (that's all they are) told me to buy more of her food rather than increase my vegatable intake, the light came on. This was a way for some to make money on my situation, nothing more.

The two positives I took from the program are (1) measuring what you eat in some way - I use myfitnesspal (2) weight loss works best with accountability - my coworker and I have a standing bet that whoever does not lose weight has to buy lunch one day that week.

If you take in less calories than you expend, you will lose weight. However, what you eat does matter to your health. I try to focus on on vegetables and lean protein. I eat some fruit occasionally and eat some almonds or almond butter with dark chocolate chips as a treat.

Something else that has really helped my understanding of how my body processed food was when I started testing my blood sugar regularly. I spent several weeks measuring 5 times a day. I learned what I could eat and not eat and under what circumstances did my blood sugar naturally rise.

I have also come to believe in a Paleo / Primal lifestyle. We need to eat truly natural stuff, get plenty of sleep, get plenty of sunshine, and plenty of exercise. Marksdailyapple.com is a good resource. Read some of their success stories for motivation.

My email is in my profile if you want to discuss.
