Farewell AOL Instant Messenger
Thought this merits a mention, many of you probably remember using it, along with ICQ, Yahoo Messenger, and other chat progams.

It is hard now to realize that back in the 90's, we were not mobile, and the infancy of laptops.as I sit typing this thread on my IPad, dial up and computer crashes seem like in another life.

Does ICQ still exist?

It's strange. I was just thinking last night that it was a bit bizarre in terms of the internet that I was still able to chat with my best best friend, primarily, still through AIM. It's what we started talking over in 2001, and we still do today. He asked me what we should migrate to. I have no clue.

I spent countless hours chatting with others on AIM. I haven't used it in years and I won't be missing it, but it was a big part of my life for a long while.

AIM was the beginning of the end of calling someone and talking to them.

ICQ is still floating around out there. I think its actually used as the backbone to a lot of free online chatroom stuff still.

I remember when you were 'hot shit' if you had a cell phone that could get on AIM.

AOL bought them, and then sold them in '10 to the Russians.

I remember first using it in 1998, and got a couple dates off it in '99. Quit using it in early 2000s between getting a little stalkerish and getting bombarded by foreigners wanting to try out written English on Americans.

Oh man, AIM played a huge role in my life. I was a teenager when it came out. It gave those awkward years a lot of confidence in talking to girls. Several of which have great stories to go a long with them.

I loved that platform.

I met and flirted with my now wife via AIM. It will always hold a special meaning to me.

If you're talking using a computer, you could try XMPP.

You could both sign up for free at the original IM service based on XMPP.

The protocol was, in fact, originally called "jabber."

AIM... haven't used it in years. Looks like I didn't even bother to configure Pidgin last time I upgraded my system.

Maybe I'll do that, before they kill it, just to see how many of my AIM contacts are still there.

I remember using a program called Trillium, because it could work with ALL the different messenger programs.

AIM was a godsend at the Academy.

It is also the reason why today I can type so well and so fast. When you have five open windows and trying to keep a running conversation with all of them (usually girls), you gotta learn to type fast.
