Kinda hippie dippy but it works for me:

Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound.

Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four.

Hold your breath for a count of seven.

Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound to a count of eight.

This is one breath. Now inhale again and repeat the cycle three more times for a total of four breaths.

Weil emphasizes the most important part of this process is holding your breath for eight seconds. This is because keeping the breath in will allow oxygen to fill your lungs and then circulate throughout the body. It is this that produces a relaxing effect in the body.

I was having difficulty sleeping to the point I was so tired I was worthless some days. My doc said it was from ptsd and told me to take tryptophan. I take three at bedtime and three when I wake up to pee around 1. On bad nights I’ll take another three around 4am if I’m feeling restless. I haven’t slept this well or felt this good during the day in years.
It increases seratonin so don’t take it if you’re in SSRIs.

This is the one I take:

Amazing Formulas L-Tryptophan Dietary Supplement 500 mg 120 Capsules - Natural Sleep Aid Supplements with 500 mg of Free Form L Tryptophan - For Stress Relief, Circulation & Immune Support https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H..._api_i_LsHdBbX9E5V2K

Keep in mind it takes a little bit before you’ll notice the full benefit. I noticed improvements in a week but it really took off after about a month.

Benadryl Liquid.

Take a modest swallow right out of the bottle and I defy you to keep awake after 15 minutes.

This puts me right out:
I close my eyes and imagine I am standing outside a place I have visited or lived in years past. Usually my childhood home or the home of my Grandparents. I then mentally enter and then walk through each room, trying to recall every person and detail of the room.
Puts me right to sleep.

Does anyone else find that the moon cycles affect their sleep patterns? I find that a full moon disrupts my already trouble sleep patterns.

I am reading this in bed and couldn’t stop laughing. My wife woke up and asked what was so funny. I told her, she half laughed and went back to sleep. Guess no sleep aid from her....

My problem isn't falling asleep, its staying asleep. I wake-up every couple of hours, not to pee, either. Very rare that I get more than three hours of sleep in a row. Its driving me nuts. I always feel tired.

I recommend to adopt habits that encourage better sleep. Here are some of them: stick to a sleep schedule, pay attention to what you eat and drink, create a restful environment, limit daytime naps, include physical activity in your daily routine, manage worries. I think this will help you. Also pay attention on your mattress, it is also very important for a good sleep. As for me I prefer latex mattresses, you can read article about them on sleepissimple for example. Also memory foam type is good.

There's not getting good sleep, and then there's insomnia.

There are about a hundred different causes of insomnia, all with different cures. Taking melatonin, for example, won't help you at all if your problem isn't lack of melatonin. In fact, taking it will make your problem worse in the long run as your body stops making it's own.

If your problem is high cortisol, there are treatments for resolving that issue. Your brain won't STFU up? Learn cognitive behavior therapy.

Here's a great video by a psychiatrist who focuses on insomnia issues. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjJGfDHCaBU

My bedroom is blacked out. I have an old iPod hooked up to a soundbar (with rear speakers on the other side of my bed) providing 24/7 rain/storm sounds for white noise.

You don't need more than 0.5 to 1.0mg of melatonin, no idea why they sell it in such huge amounts.

Since I'd be awake 24 hours at a time on my own devices, I rely on 1.5mg melatonin (break a 3.0 in half) and half a unisom generic (doxylamine succinate). Works pretty well. Not a guaranteed knockout, but I end up fairly sleepy.
