Allstate did that to me.

They TRIPLED my rates after another Allstate insured was at fault when she blew a stop sign across 5 lanes of traffic and I t-boned her.

Both policies REFUSED to pay any damages and kept referring to the other policy. When they did try to settle up, it was for 1/3 the actual cash value of my truck and zero of my medical bills.

It took a judge to decide that I was entitled to 100% of my claim plus $5000 for my trouble.

I've been hit on two separate occassions by folks with GEICO. I think GEICO is dishonest. Honestly, if I get hit by a GEICO driver again, I'm planning to just file suit.

I don't like going through my insurance company - seems they don't fight very hard and I never get my deductible back.

P.S. sorry for the thread drift and sorry if I insulted anyone that does business with GEICO. Refusing to pay claims is a way to reduce insurance costs. Hope they treat their insureds better than they treated me.

The bad news: My insurance company (AAA) totally sucks. They have done absolutely zero -- which, so far, has been fine. Progressive seems to be doing what needs to be done (getting our vehicle fixed quickly), so I haven't needed them (although some guidance would have been nice).

However, we got a letter in the mail from them about our "claim". We called and asked what claim they were talking about. The adjuster told us it referred to the claim they were handling for us. We pointed out that all we did was notify them that we'd been in an accident (which is what their insurance card said to do), but we never opened a claim and they certainly hadn't done anything for us. They said they'd close their file, but hemmed and hawed when I asked if having a "claim" would result in our premium increasing.

I'm taking that as a 'Yes'. So, even though the other driver was 100% at fault and AAA has paid nothing and done nothing, it looks like they will use this as an excuse to increase my rates when my policy comes up for renewal in November.

More than likely Progressive has your insurance info and would have contacted AAA. AAA would have taken the same action - so involving AAA on day one did not trigger AAA's action. Worst case, it just moved up the timing.

Wait and see what AAA does - they may or many not mess with your premium. If they mess with the premiums then shop the policy. Right now the important thing is that AAA does not take any step that would indicate you had any fault in the accident. I don't trust two insurance companies working together - they seem to share fault which results in the insured not getting a refund of the deductible and your record showing you have partial responsibility for the accident.

After the renewal period comes and goes, if you feel AAA treated you unfairly, write the insurance commissioner in your state.
