Different liquors can affect me differently.

However, I'm also leaning towards that you may not have been hydrated sufficiently prior to starting.

Is it possible I’m just allergic to hard alcohol? Or maybe just not used to drinking this stuff?

First scenario is possible, like anything in life is possible. But doubtful. And yes, folks develop allergy to stuff, after years being on them all the time.

Second scenario is much more likely. You have never been into hard liquor/mixed drinks, until now.

^^^ My thoughts too.
We aren't getting any younger and the body is not as resilient. Frown

At this point I may not have even another beer until Valentine’s Day. The whole experience kind of turned me off to the idea of mixed drinks and it’s not a bad thing.

There are different types of alcohol, so to speak.. This is one I encountered w/ my first homemade mead, Fusel alcohol.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fusel_alcohol

Warm ferments and stressed yeast from unhealthy ferments can push the yeast to make higher alcohols that tend to cause headaches or bad hangovers.

An old friend's wife developed an allergy to alcohol or byproducts found in alcoholic beverages. This was 30 yrs ago so I don't remember the details.
