Some think that it "gambling ", I say that with the odds ,as they are, There is no gambling ,skill or strategy involved. It's folly.
Allegedly, folly that helps Illinois education, somehow. ( Although I've yet to see actual proof.)
No different that recycling, people do it because it makes them feel good. People sold them on the feeling good, but No one can quote stats on what percentage went where or how much better the quality of life is.

With the last few [IIRC] big winners being in CA, we bought a few tickets while we were in Irvine 2 weeks ago. Won $8 Probably mail them tickets to my wife's nephew. Can't claim them here.
THIS JUST IN, BREAKING NEWS Three friends and three siblings refuse to buy lottery tickets Because "You will take care of us when you win "
So that's how that goes. This message has been edited. Last edited by: bendable,

I have always called it a voluntary tax contribution, since some of it does go to the school system. I only buy a ticket or two when its over 1billion, what some people spend on tickets I have spent on stocks, guess who has done better.

Hah! Except that they tax every $ that is used to buy tickets, not to mention every $ of the winnings that is spent on something!

Sold at the Murphy gas station close to our house. Bunch of TV cameras set up there this morning. Guess they interview the manager.

Since it was bought at a convenience store, and it’s known at which the time the ticket was sold, and maybe the security cam was on, it should be fairly easy to ID the purchaser.

I rarely play, maybe once a year. I played this time. Didn't match a single number. Odds are very astronomically low but that being said, someone will win. I don't even need to win the top prize. The second or third level is enough for me to be happy. $2 for a dream.....

That shows what long odds are, viz. a virtual impossibility.
The odds of winning powerball are 1 in 300 million.
In my finite math class at Cal State the teacher talked about the cali lottery. IIRC, the odds were 1 in 14 million. Again, virtually impossible. Yet, he confessed, he played every week. Ironic.
I don't know if this still holds true: there have been groups when the payoff reaches a certainty of profit against the odds, that they buy all the combinations.
At that point you are betting that nobody else hits the numbers, very big risk.

No, you don’t understand the math. It was accounting for all the other payoffs and including the odds of others hitting the jackpot. It was an arbitrage - recognizing a no-lose proposition. They even made a movie out of it. What was a factor was if another group was using the same tactic, it lowered the payout for both which was also captured in the movie.

On planet Bendable, The most you could win in a lottery would be $30 million , net.
Every $30 mil. Increment would allow another number to be picked. A $120 mil. jackpot would allow four numbers (winners) possible .

Experience shows it's the big jackpots that draw in incremental players.
