I’m not an expert, but I’ll offer an opinion. One can mention rendering aid & the rest, but just like the aggressive dog scenarios, ‘pepper spray’ can involve less entanglements than using a gun.

It’s understood than encounters vary widely, not possible to have simple, canned responses.

I agree, another tool in the box, should a need arise to use such.

I've kept a pepperball blast on me since testing them a while back. Over a year of carry and its been good with the safety being all I've needed to keep it in a pocket. Basically, it looks like a long cigar case with a twist to fire 3x live-x pepper balls in powder/mist form.

The downside is you likely have more "shots" in a can of OC, and OC is likely cheaper, but these are reloadable. They also have an inert so you can practice, which has a very pleasant baby powder smell as a random side note.

I have been retired for a while now, so have not had exposure to the newest technology. This is based on my knowledge/training of a few years ago.

To lessen the possibility of secondary exposure, use gel/foam carriers. I had exposures with streams 'ricocheting/splashing' off the intended target. The downside to the encapsulated carriers is there was a slight delay in the response to the exposure compared to fog/stream.

In 1992 I was very much involved in the effort to get OC ("Pepper Spray") approved for use by LE in California. At the time, the only types of teargas products allowed by the Attorney General's Office in the state were those utilizing CN and CS gas, and they had the sole authority to approve any kind of teargas for either LE or civilian usage. There was a lot of politics involved, but ultimately we got approval after a statewide testing/reporting program. After officers were approved to carry OC, non-sworn police employees got approval and within just a year or so, private persons could carry it and use it for defensive purposes.

I had the opportunity to use OC defensively a few times and found it to be very effective if it was used right (directing it into the threatening person's nose and mouth in addition to the eyes, so as to diminish the ability to breath normally), and I really like carrying it as a readily available alternative to firearms if deadly force isn't needed.

Since I retired and moved to Arizona, I've used OC twice to dissuade javelina that decided they wanted to chase my leashed dogs and I, and it worked great as a distraction device! They stopped following us as soon as they hit the cloud of (fogger) OC I dispensed!

I carry an ASP Key Defender on my keychain and have a can of OC-10 Counter Assault (fogger version) handy when I walk our dogs. Both of these work well and though I prefer these, Vexor offers a pretty good product in a streaming form if more range is wanted. Streaming type OC dispensers require more aiming to insure the formula impacts the nasal and throat passages to get the full effect. Stay away from the small twist top type cannisters as they tend to break and can accidentally discharge the material if stored in a pocket.

When I was a cop we were bound by POLICY to render aid and decontaminate the subject. I highly doubt that a state law forces you to do that. Many instructors say things that just aren’t so. When people tell me “it’s the law” I always ask for the statute.

You may be bound by your position as a security member, but if I spray a dog or some jackwagon out in public-rest assured I’m not sticking around, I’m going somewhere safe(r) and calling the cops to weight in before he does and says I assaulted him.

Check your local laws, which, honestly, everyone should be well read on anyway for the aid after spray thing.

That's a requirement for cops to render/provide access to aid to suspects, which is pretty universal; however, there are a lot of reasons it wouldn't work for someone not in uniform. I would second spray and call 911 first unless your local laws say differently.

Fox Labs is what I used throughout my nearly two decade LE career. (And I can personally attest that it really hurts!)

What Rogue said. Fox Labs is liquid purgatory.

We spray 100 new police recruits annually, and they will plea with us not to spray them with Fox Labs or Top Cop. They ask us to spray them with the lesser brands (foam, etc.). If they're issued Fox Labs, that's what we use during their exposure.

Fox Labs is no joke. On exposure day, after being sprayed with Fox Labs, we've had recruits do everything from take off running out of the training area to punching our metal conex container and yelling. Be aware of avoiding cross contamination if forced to use it.
