I'm thinking he slammed a brew right before heading to the store and was able to walk okay until that ONE LAST BEER took hold...
We used to chug pure grain punch and then go the football stadium to watch the game. You were normal and fine as you entered the gate and then about 20 minutes later you were hammered.

Three Martini's (Beefeater Gin) at a Christmas Dinner, during the meal and I felt fine.
ONE Heinken Beer a bit later and I was wasted. Couldn't even stand up.
