Cats have moved into the space under my step-daughters porch. Smells pretty bad. Is there anything I can do to keep them out of there? The under porch is enclosed with lattice. The local humane society said we could trap them but then what do I do with them?

Put human hair clippings from the barber shop under the porch. I hear that cats can't stand to get it in their fur.

Back the lattice up with chicken wire (on the inside). Easy to work with. Cheap.

Moth balls or crystals.

Seriously.

Food, traps, then seal up.

Relocate them or take to pound.

Orange peel. They hate it. And it's biodegradeable.

Once you get one in the trap, they will come get the animal.

I had a herd of feral cats living across the street from me at a farmhouse. When I went to talk to the guy he said his GF had left one and it had kittens…but he was feeding them….ughhh

I bought a have-a-heart trap and began placing it behind my truck. The cats had begun spraying my police car and my truck, and I was done with it. I took the first one to the pound and explained the problem. The nice lady gave me another trap. I then began placing the traps in the bed of the truck and left a blanket next to it. I caught one cat a week for 12 weeks in a row. I’d bait the trap, catch a cat, throw the blanket over it to keep it calm and drive it to the pound.

After that I didn’t care what they did with them. But the spraying cats were gone. The neighbor did ask if I had seen any coyotes around as his “cats” were missing.

Years ago I had a similar problem with raccoons. I was fortunate working as a cop asking my quartermaster for a large handheld can of expired pepper spray. I used it to spray the area under the house and porch ... no more problems even well over 10 years later.

Should work for cats too. Maybe get a local cop to give you a hand. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Yes

I set a trap this afternoon. We’ll see if we catch anything tonight.

Around here you trap them, then bring them in, in the trap, to get neutered. Then you release them where you trapped them.
Wash, rinse, repeat until they've all been neutered.
The neutered ones in the Trap, Neuter, Release program will have their ears tipped so you know which ones need to be brought in.

I'm not sure if the neutering reduces how much they spray.

My experience is that a mature Tom, once neutered will happily continue to mark his territory. I don’t believe the smell is any less pungent. I think the neighbor is the problem here and feeding ferals should be a citation. Of course my grandma always fed her barn cats, but that was the country and plenty of those got squashed in the road and eaten by yotes. Not very “humane “.
