Kind of a yucky topic, but I would like some input. My two big toes have it. They are dark. It's mainly a cosmetic issue, but I would like to get rid of it. Other than cosmetically, it doesn't affect me at all. The only thing off the table is oral medication. My dermatologist says the oral medication requires regular blood monitoring and can have some very nasty side affects. Sounds like that cure is worse than the disease. So has anything worked for any of you? I've tried several products. Results have been poor. Thanks for your input.

My wife found some liquid that you brush on like nail polish. It kept my fungus at bay, but didn't totally eradicate it. She heard somewhere to use Vick's Vapo Rub. It appears to be working so far.

I use a combination of Vick's Vapo Rub and a product called Emuaid. Both seem to really help, but I can't say it's gone. It's an ongoing process that's no big deal to keep up.

You should be talking to a podiatrist. There are topical treatments available by prescription.

I had to take an oral anti fungal to get rid of mine. takes time because of the nails slow growth but works

the first one they gave me made me very sun sensitive (doesn't do well when I'm on the boat almost daily for a lot of the year) so asked to change to a different one, floconozol (sp) but think that was it

I had a big toe nail with it. The nail had partially separated from the bed so I trimmed that part of the nail off, filed it back to the healthy part of nail every day, and applied clotrimazole cream to the nail bed and margin of the healthy nail. It was uncomfortable and took about six weeks of keeping up with it every day, but the nail grew back healthy and haven't had a problem since.

This doesn't replace the advice of your doctor of course.

Wash toes with hydrogen peroxide from drugstore or supermarket. It works and it’s cheap. Put the liquid on and let it dry on its own as contact time is important.

Also cover shower floor with hydrogen peroxide. It will likely foam a bit as it sanitized.

Colloidal Silver is supposed to work for this. Also heard oregano oil works.

Only peripherally related, but I have found that taking high doses of vitamin B1 makes my nails grow like crazy. This might help in recovery once the anti-fungal treatments have conquere the underlying (get it?) issue.

I too have this on my two big toes - yuck. My dermatologist daughter suggested I not take oral Rx meds; instead use Vick's Vapor Rub and wash with hydrogen peroxide cut 50:50 with water.

I got good results cosmetically with Kerasal from Amazon, and a big honking file that's like sandpaper on a stick.

Vicks Vaporub is what the doctor recommended, but Kerasal worked fine, and no odor. Doctor also recommended against oral medications due to possible adverse effects on the liver.

I did not try clotrimazole or H2O2.

Hydrogen peroxide got rid of my toenail fungus after soaking my feet in a 50/50 mix of HP and water every day for about 15-30 minutes few weeks. Hydrogen peroxide is a wonderful product, dirt cheap and has dozens of different applications including getting rid of toenail fungus.

This may not help the OP with his situation, but my Doc put me on the prescription Spironolactone for what was my easily broken fingernails/toenails. It worked very well and no problems since.

The only thing is I could not take HCTZ at the same time, per Doc, as they do the same thing.

Lamasil. Nightly before bed. Cheap and it works pretty well.

Go to a Health food store and get some tea tree oil. Both my wife and son used it and it works great and eradicated it.

When my personal care doctor at the VA clinic suggested the use of Vicks Vaporub for one of big toe nail fungus I thought he was issuing a old wives tale remedey but tried it anyway and in just a couple of days noticed improvement and fungus was gone in a short period of time. .......................................... drill sgt.

A question that always occurs to me whenever I read about something like this: Who was the first person who thought it would be a good idea to put Vicks VapoRub on toenail fungus?

Someone that knew it has camphor, which is a topical anti fungal agent, was likely the person.
