I agree with the use of Milorganite during the summer, it's a great product for the summer. It also has typically 4-5% iron, which helps with greening up the lawn without excessive growth.

ensigmatic,

I am not familiar with the fertilizer you mentioned, so I am not sure. However, it sounds like it might be better than the Turf builder product you previously mentioned.

No Phosphate fertilizers are becoming more common in many states, as it has a tendency to run off and pollute the water.

I do not know if "no phosphate" means "low sodium" or not. But be prepared to do a lot of watering just in case, since you are applying it in the summer heat.

I even improved on that solution. Nearby landscape supply store from which I obtain our sprinkler heads had Speedzone. So I went over there for that. Turned out they had a Lesco slow-release 24-0-11 with 2% iron. Comes out to be 1 lb. of nitrogen/1,000 sq. ft. Milorganite would have been .864 lbs./1,000 sq. ft. This has 11% potassium, as opposed to the Milorganite having no potassium and having 4% phosphorus.

They also have a higher-potassium (don't recall the numbers) for fall, and a 25-0-6 with 5% iron.

Guy I talked to there said he switches off between the 24-0-11 with 2% iron and 25-0-6 with 5% iron.

Thanks for the feedback, suggestions and education, guys!

Lesco makes good products for landscaping, usually only available at landscape stores. I go to one in Surprise recommended by my general landscape/irrigation guy. We use a Lesco pre-emergent weed killer to keep the dogs' area free of nasty desert weeds, and it works very well. I mix in glyphosate in the tank, too, so I get everything. I have a 26 gallon tank (from Northern Tool) I hook up to my tractor, and it takes about 8 tankfuls twice a year to do the areas we need to. I added a 50 foot hose to it, hire a helper to spray, and sit back in the tractor, just keeping it positioned for him.
