That's not an automatic. That's quartz.

Automatic is a mechanical movement that uses a rotor weight to wind it up as you move around.

Marzy is correct. Automatic refers to the winding, it automatically winds itself or charges its reserve if you will by your movement moving its rotor.

Watches that automatically reset themselves or synch with atomic time are typically quartz or solar quartz watches. (Seiko spring drive excluded as it’s a bit of a hybrid between both)

You can put a compass next to your watch to see if it is magnetized. North will point toward the watch if it is magnetized. Cell phones, computers, speakers can cause a watch to become magnetized.

I'm thinking we can probably let up on the folks fortunate enough not to share the addiction and the lexicon.... Razz

Automatically.

Well, I bought an auto! A blue dialed Armida. We'll see how it works when it gets here.

Mechanical watches work in very cold weather.
I’ve had battery powered watches fail on the farm when the temperatures were real low, can’t remember if it was in the negative numbers or, in single digits.

I'm reminded of that Northern Exposure episode where Maurice (wealthy, retired astronaut) buys an extremely old Augsburg clock, and is then upset that it doesn't keep perfect time.

By the way, that was a fun little show. I don't think it's streaming anywhere.

Not just point North toward the watch.

If the watch causes the compass needle to move, then it has been magnetized, and needs service by a professional.

Mechanical watches have three natural enemies: water, magnets, and tile floors.
