Years ago, there was a young Mexican man (Juan Carlos) that worked with us. He was trying his hardest to do things right-even had a green card. And he was learning English through practical usage and self-study.

One day, we go into a convenience store. He's looking around enough to where the clerk is thinking maybe he's a shoplifter. The clerk asks Juan Carlos if he needs some help. Juan C. says in his best broken English that he wanted penis.

The clerk's reaction was priceless. He said "sorry, I didn't get that". J.C. thought the clerk was hard-of-hearing and repeated he wanted some penis, just a bit louder.

I explained to the clerk he was looking for peanuts, and not a date.

Some folks don't know the negative connotation "beaner". There are folks that truly don't intend to be discourteous in any way, it's just how things work out. Was there malicious intent? I don't know...wasn't there. Just an FYI: my wife and daughter are both Hispanic and neither knew "beaner" was a bad word. Guess they didn't get the memo on being offended Roll Eyes

It would be nice to know the race of the offensive order taker. Also, is there video evidence of the "barista" writing it on there vs the offended party doing it himself? Video of the incident and not just some story after the fact would be nice. So many possibilities of what actually happened. This could be as innocent as a poorly said name misinterpreted by someone, to something more heinous like Peter and his friend trying to get a paycheck. Either way, don't affect my life, so I'll just sit back and watch the show.

Opus Dei, I've had many instances like that with my father in law. Can be quite funny sometimes....others, just embarrassing!

I'm guessing most people, in going about their daily lives, don't think about how social media would react to how they do their jobs. I know I work with people who should be particularly attuned to that, and even they aren't.

There was a story, I don't remember where, about a Starbucks (could have been another coffee house, but I remember coffee) where a guy named Marc gave his name and added, "That's Marc, with a C."
