As noted elsewhere, I put a small hot air furnace in my new shop.

I had the 275 gallon tank filled once I was sure everything was tight and leak-free (Mid-October IIRC). For some reason, the tank gauge is jammed on 1/4 tank and I haven't bothered to disassemble the plumbing to fix it.

Been single-digit cold for several days now and I got to wondering how I was doing on fuel so I dipped the tank with my graduated stick (got the measurements off the innerwebz and marked a suitable piece of dowel).

I assume a fill up is roughly 250 gallons (they don't fill to capacity to prevent spills and allow for expansion). It dipped this morning at 195+ gallons. So in 90 days more-or-less I've burned something less than 60 gallons. Given that the furnace is running REALLY rich (and I can't get anybody to come look at it, all busy with residential work) I'll take that.

Guess I'm gonna hafta teach myself furnace maintenance/repair.

The work and insulation you did on your building is paying off.

Indeed. And at the current price of heating oil, it won't take long to amortize the cost!

I put a Modine Hot Dawg propane heater in mine and a 250 tank. I keep the shop at around 40-45F unless I'm working out there, and I usually go through around 2/3 to a full tank a year.

Mine is 30X40 with a 16' ceiling. R38 in the ceiling and R19 on the walls.

I've entertained putting a woodstove out there, but with all of the flammable/explosive things I have in there it makes me a little nervous. Think I'll stick with the propane.

I would like to help but it's been at least 30 years years since I've done oil heat.

How long has it been since the electrodes have been adjusted? If you're not getting mega spark between them, that your problem! Not igniting the oil properly.

Worn out oil nozzle could also be the culprit, delivering too much oil.

Quite possibly all of the above, plus an air shutter adjustment. I bought it (well) used and just hooked it up and lit it off thinking I'd get my burner guy to come tune it up. Soon as it warms up a mite, I'll dive into it. Looking at the Ewe Toob videos, it doesn't seem overly complicated.

EDIT: Looked it up - 1996 so that's 25 years ago.
