My deepest condolences to you and your family. DM is a horrible disease and I had to put two of my GSDs to sleep due to it. I was so heart broken, I was going to swear off GSDs but they developed a genetic test for it for and quite a few responsible breeders embraced it (Czech Border Guard Kennels) while quite a few of the German breeders refused to. My female is a carrier (East German and Czech lines) so she was fixed. My male is clear of it (entirely Czech Border Guard kennels).

One last thing, DO NOT Doubt you did the right thing! I waited probably a month too long with my first GSD that had it. Just remember, they will be waiting for us in the prime of their lives when we meet again.

My condolences. Bandit went a year ago last June and I remember her in my lap as she went to sleep.

You did the right thing.

Yesterday was the date we lost our beloved male golden Bogey.
That was in 2021 and it still sucks!

Our collective hearts are breaking with yours.

We had to let our (nearly) 13 year old, working-line female go last spring. Like Noel, she gave my wife and I many years of love and joy. Jade was just a bit aloof, she wasn’t needy for attention at all, but she always greeted us in the morning and said “goodnight” before turning in.

The story about Jade I like to tell is that she had two dog beds, one in our bedroom, and one in the great room on the other side of the bedroom wall. She would move back and forth to each as the mood struck her. Except when we had granddaughters in the house. The front bedroom was fixed up for them when they came up to stay. Jade would go down the hall and sleep outside the bedroom door when they were here.

This to say, your story makes my heart ache again. I wish you well, the memories will keep you warm.

I read your post yesterday at work and I got teary-eyed. I’m so sorry for your loss.

My girl is 5 this winter and I’m already dreading the day we have to put her down. She’s the glue in this house and I can imagine like without her.

Rejoice in your memories of her and know she’ll be waiting for you one day. Tail wagging and going crazy like they do every time you return home after one two many hours away.

Eight years to retirement! Just waiting!
