Looks like I'm going to pull the trigger tomorrow on a Rec Tec 700 and join the pellet smoker crowd. The one promo they have is for 200lbs of their Ultimate Blend. I do a good amount of fish in my current propane smoker and I use the Apple chips from Lowes in that and it's perfect for my fish dip. Anyone know of a good quality Applewood pellet out there that I should look at? Thanks

I'm fortunate to have a local BBQ store in St.Louis that carries just about everything needed for cooking BBQ. One thing you will notice with your PG is that it won't add near the smoke flavor of a typical smoker so you might want to pick up one of the "smoker tubes or other apparatus that are sold to create more smoke. I think you are going to love it. 200lbs is a shit ton of pellets unless you do a ton of cooking is super cold conditions. I would just buy a few smaller bags of different woods to see what you like first before committing to such a large amount. A usually use a blend but also like cherry or apple from lumberjack brands. https://www.stlbbqstore.com/fuels-and-smoke/pellets/ I typically get two 20lb bags from the store above where I posted a link.

I have not yet begun to procrastinate |
I hope you don’t have to take all 200# at once! No way I would be happy only having one type of wood pellet. Better be a variety pack. -------- After the game, the King and the pawn go into the same box.

Spinnin' Chain |
Many pellets are produced with alder, which is considered a hardwood, and/or a combination of some other biomass and blended with the branded wood type; occasionally oils are added. Determine what the pellets are made with. Price is not your friend and you will be pleased with your research efforts. For the price I'm a fan of Lumberjack Pellets .

I don't have to get that promo bundle. I can just get the grill and add on the accessories I wish to have since they're running 20% off on them. I thought 200lbs sound like a lot. That 200lbs was their white oak/red oak/ hickory mix. They also have their Perfect Mix which is Maple, Hickory, Cherry, & Apple blend.

Thank you Very little |
I would get 100 pounds that’s just 5 bags at 20 pounds each, also if it doesn’t have a front mount tray so you have a place to set food, utensils etc and a cover

Definitely getting the front fold down shelf. That's one big gripe I currently have with my current vertical propane smoker. I was leaning towards the medium sized Stampede but they do not have a shelf yet for that one. It's coming though. I'm also interested in the cold smoker box attachment and that only works on the 700 as well.

Move Up or Move Over |
I've been using a pellet smoker for over 10 years.I bought the 700 a few months back. The 200#'s is a good deal. It's not like they are going to go bad... 200#'s is just 2-3 months worth for me. I was skeptical of the blends at first but now that is what I use 90% of the time. I do keep some single flavor bags around in case I want to work on a specific flavor profile.

Better Than I Deserve! |
The Rec Tec are a good Oak/Hickory pellet. Don't hesitate to use them. I purchase Lumberjack pellets in a group bulk buy and you can get them for half of what you're going to pay in the store. They do group buys all over the country. I like the OHC blend but the MHC is the most popular. I buy 1/4 ton at a time and have participated in two group buys over the last couple of years. Seems that Lumberjack is one of the preferred pellets on here as well as other places. The Rec Tec 200lb combo special for this weekend is $48. At that price, it doesn't make sense not to add those on.

Move Up or Move Over |
Since Arkansas is part of my territory I used to stop at BBQr's Delight and pick up bulk orders with my truck. Now that the newer all wood pellets are out I don't stop there any more. I'm glad to not have to buy flavored sawdust any more.

Fighting the good fight |
As mentioned, Lumberjack is my go-to brand. I like their Pecan blend, but it's all good. Smoke Ring is pretty good too. B&B and Traeger are so-so.
Love that place. I stop by once or twice a year when I'm going to/through StL.

Thank you Very little |
I run the Traeger Mix blend in mine, used to buy separate blends, but they come in 20 pound bags and the mix gor-met blend is 30 pounds at costco for the same $20. I've run GMC pellets in my Traeger and noticed a significant increase in the amount of ash inside the smoker, a thick blanket of ash on the bottom and more on start up. The traeger pellets don't seem to do that, I've bought some online from a Pellet Farm in Upper MI, you can get thousand pound pallets from them. Didn't really notice a difference. I agree 200 pounds isn't much, I have 4 30 pound bags in the garage now, last me a couple of months, a 5 hour rib smoke will go through several pounds of pellets... Pick up a Kingsford Charcoal Dispenser, when you open up a bag of pellets, pour it in the dispenser, easier to move around and pour into the hopper. Have you tried out the Rec Tec yet? I'm trying to decide between the 700 and the 590.
