Naproxen (Aleve) Question Login/Join
Get my pies

Yesterday just before going on a road trip (of course!) to visit my wife’s grandparents in Ohio, I tweaked my back pretty good and was in a good amount of pain. Before getting on the road I popped two Naproxen which always seem to work well for me.

Well it didn’t seem to do anything and after we got to the halfway point in Clarion PA for the night (we decided to drive 4 hours Thur and 3 hours Fri) I was in agony and my wife picked up some Acetaminophen at a nearby Walmart. Within 30 minutes I was feeling better and actually able to move. This morning I looked at the bottle of Naproxen and realized it had an expiration date of April 2022, so it’s like 18 months expired.

My question: would this stuff stop working like that after 18 months? Seems like that’s not really possible but I’m not sure about how drug potency works.

Nope.

The scientists discovered that naproxen retains its pain-killing potency for an average of 52 months after the expiration date. Keep in mind, however, that the tablets tested were still sealed in their original packaging, so an opened bottle probably won't last quite as long.

It wasn’t expired. You just doubled up between the long acting naproxen and Tylenol

Yep, had nothing to do with the potency of the Naproxen, which will be 90% or better for a few decades. Moreso, it was the tag teaming the pain from two different directions.

I recently read an article somewhere (a journal, not Mad Magazine) that stated the combination of an NSAID (naproxen or ibuprofen) and acetaminophen gave excellent pain relief and was safe. The article claimed that the pain relief was better than opioids in many cases.

FWIW I also use CBD cream.

I was skeptical at first but one of my doctors put some on my shoulder muscle and I had relief in less than one minute.

I don't buy the cheap stuff, I buy mine at the Doctors office, it costs me $90 bucks for one, but it lasts quite a long time.

I don't like to waste my money but by golly real true proper CBD is worth the $90 cost.

BTW the one my Doc sells does not have any THC or whatchamacallit in it so if a drug test is needed (I'm retired now so it doesn't matter) I'd have no concerns.

Best wishes to you, hope you are feeling better.

While this is generally correct, THC-free CBD products are made on the same machinery as THC CBD products, so cross-contamination does occur, albeit in small amounts. Point is: it is absolutely possible (and I've seen in happen several times) to get a THC positive result on a UA test after using "THC-free" CBD products. Source: One of my duties is implementing and overseeing the UA & BAT testing program (random, post-incident & reasonable suspicion) at my job.

I wouldn't trust a THC-free CBD product if my job depended on it.

If you are over 55 and using any over t. c, meds for over three weeks,
I'd suggest you consult your doctor. Livers, ,kidneys lymph systems, gall bladders, digestive stuff need checking out .

Aging changes junk , how stuff reacts to meds.

You are correct. A physician friend of mine is the Chief Medical Officer for a nationwide drug testing firm. Every day their lab is able to test for new substances and are able to detect minute amounts of illicit drugs. The ETOH testing now goes out days instead of 24 hours. I do not think that there is rigorous testing to determine if THC is present in a CBD product You also need to keep in mind that DOD has a different cutoff than the FAA, DOC and your job.
