The folks I work with are great, especially the ones on my team. They all are hard working and down to earth. Most of them are fairly conservative and into the same things I am.

There is a young lady I hired a few years ago and I was not certain about her political leanings. Doesn't matter because she's great, does her job well and is a pleasure to work with. At lunch yesterday, out of the blue she starts telling us about this awesomely decked out vehicle she saw earlier in the week while out and about and how she honked and gave the driver a thumbs up. She proceeded to show us the pic she took with her cell phone:

As the lunchtime chat progressed, she asked if we'd take her shooting sometime as she wants to learn.

There's hope!

Good way to learn your bad habits and develop some of her own. Insist that she take a basic pistol course first, and pay for it. It will be less than the amount of your ammo she'll waste doing the wrong things she's learned from Hollywood.

^^ Those two things (the Basic Pistol Class and a day at the range) don't need to occur in that order...Take her shooting, THEN suggest she take a formal training class! Seriously, It's a comradery / team building thing.

Not to pile on, but many of us on the forum are pretty highly trained in firearms. I might even guess the majority of us.

I’m going to say take her and just have some fun. Brief her on the rules of how to safely handle a firearm, and just let her put a few rounds down range to see how she feels about it. She might fire one shot and decide “nope, not for me.” If she thinks it’s something that she’d want to do again, definitely encourage her to take a class. A real pistol course can be expensive, not including the cost of ammo.

I generally start newbies on 22lr. I’ll bring 9mm too, but let them fire a few rounds up close into cardboard, then as long as they’re having fun back off to a safe distance (at least 10 yards according to MGM Targets, or 15 according to my daughter Big Grin) and shoot steel. Once they’re comfortable with the 22, then I’ll is if they want to try 9mm.

A few years ago the manager of the branch where I ws banking, expressed some curiosity about shooting. I invited her to a range session. She had never held a firearm in her hands, so before we went to the range, I spent a couple hours with her showing her how the handgun worked and most important, going over the "Four Commandments" and discussing why we needed to be anal about them.

She's an intelligent woman, caught on quickly, so we went to the range. I started her with a .22 LR revolver, she was comfortable with that and wanted to move up, so we used .38 SPL in a .357 revolver. She really liked that. Finished the session with a couple magazines of 9mm.

We worked from the 5-yard line. From the very first shots with the .22, until the end of the session with the 9mm, EVERY single target that she shot, she was grouping in two inches or less. From the first rounds that she had ever fired in a handgun.
