Shark shocker: 20-foot great white 'Deep Blue' caught on camera

You'll definitely need a bigger boat.

The great white shark known as "Deep Blue" is nearly 20 feet long and is thought to be the largest great white ever caught on film.

Shark conservationist Mauricio Hoyos Padilla captured footage of the massive beast nearly three years ago, while doing work for Discovery Channel's "Shark Week" programming. At the time, "Deep Blue" was pregnant.

In the video above, "Deep Blue" swims up to the cage and a diver pushes the shark as it pokes around before it eventually swims away. Hoyos Padilla captured the incredible footage near Guadalupe Island, off the west coast of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula.

It's estimated that "Deep Blue," who has become so famous it has its own Twitter account, is nearly 50 years old, Discovery found.

According to a 2014 study, great white sharks have an average lifespan of 70 years, though it varies between male and females.

It's likely that Deep Blue became so big simply because of her age, said Gavin Naylor, program director at the Florida Program for Shark Research. "It's an older animal and when you look at the distribution of any animal, it's the larger animals that are older," Naylor told Fox News in an interview.

Yeeeeah.... Beautiful animal, love to see something like that at peak health and size, fine example of the species. But I'm fine with pictures. No way I'm getting in a frickin' cage next to that thing in it's own environment. Eek

Y'all need to click on the link and watch the slideshow/video. The have a really clear picture from the same depth as the shark looking back toward the cage w/ 2 divers. They either had 2 cages down or got really lucky with a GoPro.

Unless there’s bigger fish out there that you haven’t seen yet. What if Deep Blue is just a toddler?

Carcharodon megalodon, a prehistoric shark, prowled the jurassic seas.
Reaching 70' he was a ferocious predator.
7" teeth got the job done.
Perhaps his descendents still swim in the depths.

Just outside of the Golden Gate is a group of islands called the Farallon's. The area is known as the Red Triangle as it's the breeding ground of Great Whites in the Eastern Pacific, along with colonies for sea lions and elephant seals. Talk to long-time fisherman and there's plenty of tales about 20' great whites. There's several confirmed residents that are around 15-17'

Yeah. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope...

I was terrified to even swim in a LAKE after seeing Jaws. No telling what phobias will be triggered by that YUGE sumbitch. Probably have to curl up in a corner in the fetal position with a blanket.

This allows us to track all the tagged sharks. Interesting if you're an ocean swimmer, etc.

They have stats. The sharks are named, weight, etc. Pretty interesting.
