Tomorrow I’m schd to have surgery on both sides. This surgery will implant the Piezo power transducer and magnet under the skin onto the skull behind the ear. It is attached to the skull via an anchor drilled into the skull. After a couple of months for the bone to grow around the anchor, the unit can be activated. The “Osia 2 sound processors are mounted externally against the skin behind the ear and are held in place by a magnet contained in the transducer.

Sound is transmitted to the inner ear via bone conduction.

I’m hoping for a increase in hearing, especially in freq ranges I don’t hear or barely hear.

My current hearing aids were a big step up from prior aids in terms of hearing but still miss a lot.

I grew up on the Texas coastal area in high humidity before they put tubes in kids ears. Infections destroyed one ear drum and damaged another, leading to mastoid surgeries.

A future in music was abandoned in my late teens.

Newer aids and restored freq ranges motivated me to fool around again with guitar playing after I retired. I’m hoping for addl improvements as well as better understanding of speech. Regular aids tend to scramble hearing in crowded rooms.

I sort of fell into a group of songwriters and have been writing primarily as a lyricist. I co-write with others who write the music. We’ll see where that goes. 3 Performers are using my collaborations now.

At 74 I’m having fun with it.

I don’t hear thunder unless it’s very close or higher freqs. This is supposed to help with this.

We’ll have to wait and see if it works.

Anyone had this sort of surgery? What are your results?

I have a friend that has a cochlear implant. She tells me the sound takes some getting used to, but that it is was worth it. Apparently it needs replacing now and her insurance is balking at the cost.

My grandmother had it done when the surgery was brand new tech in her 70s after being nearly deaf for most of her adult life. It was amazing, watching her as they got the device dialed in. It took a bunch of visits to get it properly set up, not sure if it’s any easier nowadays. The first time she had heard herself speak, she was startled because she didn’t remember the sound of her own voice.

Best of luck!

Rush Limbaugh used to tell a great story about how he finally got his cochlear implants adjusted and working properly. Good listening if you can go find a recording or podcast.

Found a transcript on one show where he discussed them... When you get to the bottom of the transcript there are additional links to other transcribed shows with discussions on the same topic....

BTW still miss Rush's shows...

I miss Limbaugh’s shows as well. Thanks for the Utube video.

I tried an external unit using bone conduction. Apparently, a lot of progress has been made in sound quality. The sample I heard didn’t have the “fuzziness”. Of
course I’m lucky not to be profoundly deaf.

An ex-manager had those done, he said it made a world of difference, he could actually hear a conversation and not ask you to repeat anything.

Great guy, I was glad for him when he had it done post retirement.

I have BAHA (Bone Anchored Hearing Aid) that has the titanium bolt in the skull behind the ear. On my 4th generation processor (Cochlear)and it was a life changer for me. In the ear we’re not strong enough to get the sound to the inner ear nerves.

Did this back in 1999 with my audiologist and head Dr in the ENT clinic. Was one of the first patients to get BAHA and worked with them for any patients that would like to talk to someone that has the procedure done.

Great thing is also the ability to have direct connection via Bluetooth or new models have direct connections with iPhones. This provides excellent audio quality and wide frequency bands.

PM me if you have questions.

Thanks! I am getting a BAHA unit as well. It uses magnets to hold the units in place. Today the transducers are to be installed under the skin. May well follow up with you.
