This just keeps getting worse. SECDEF basically saying the US will not, cannot, and won't even TRY to evac ALL US CITIZENS from a hostile country? This isn't Grenada med school students - these are people who were SENT THERE by the govt.

Back in the day, whenever I went overseas as a .gov civilian, I was reasonably confident that if something bad happened: a) The cavalry would come to save my ass, or b) If a) wasn't possible, the cavalry would eventually come and avenge me, in a terrible and impressive way.
Emphasis: "Back in the day." And even back in the day there seemed a direct correlation to the political party in the WH.
Anyone who joins the foreign service (or a civil service job that requires foreign TDY) after this week needs their damn head examined.

You do realize we have American citizens spread out across the country outside of Kobul, right? We hold no power over the Taliban. They are holding all the cards. The only way to get back on top is to got back in full force and take back the country. That isn't going to happen. This has the makings of another Iran. They start taking hostages and trading them for whatever they want, or killing them.
