Repairing cast iron waffle
Hi guys, I'm trying to help my daughter repair an antique waffle iron. The original tab that allows the iron to rest vertical has broken off. The pictures show the broken version vs. the intact original tab. Can this be repaired? It doesn't need to be perfect, just functional.

Sorry, trying to get the pics to post....

Thoughts?

Call around to local welders/machine shops.

Cast iron can be effectively welded.

Finding someone that knows how to do it properly is key.

Welding cast iron is a lost skill.

I had a cracked boiler, I called dozens of people many years ago to weld it.

Replacement was in the tens of thousands.

No one would touch it. I finally found one guy.

He took one look at it and said no problem.

A couple of hours later the boiler was up and running. The repair lasted as long as I owned the building.

He said that decades ago, hardly anyone would weld cast iron.

Thanks all. Fortunately it doesn't have to be pretty just functional. We will keep looking locally for a cast iron welder/fabricator.

I have my parents waffle iron - gift from their wedding in 1960.

Cast-iron grates for waffles or flat-grill, chrome finish, bakelite slider control----Ni-chrome spiral heating wire. Still makes the best waffles ever.

Batter secret if you don't already know - separate egg yolks and whites - whip up whites separate and fold into the batter. You can thank me later!

The small amount of cast that I’ve welded, I always used ni-rod which is nickel. A machine or fab shop in your area should be able to fix you up. It’s definatey can be tricky

Braze or silver solder might be easier and effective enough for this application.

This with a preheat of 500-600F. Inconel 182 or other weld consumable manufacturers bare wire or electrode with similar chemistry and mechanical properties.
