Horry Sheet!

I've heard of this homebrew before but never actually tried it.

That bolt on the ATV hadn't responded in the least to heat, patience and PB Blaster, so I mixed up a batch and soaked it down good a couple of times about 4 hours apart. Let it sit another couple of hours and damned if it didn't back right out.

Freakin' amazing.

Given the evaporation rate of acetone, I can't see having much on hand, but I'll be damn sure to have the components to mix up a dab when needed.

Thanks!

A simple mixture of 50/50 automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and acetone.

The acetone floats on top of the ATF, so you need to shake it up good before applying. Very thin so a little messy but DAMNED effective.

I used an oil can to squirt it all around the offending fastener.

I think it's essentially Kroil.

You might want to check out methyl ethyl ketone (MEK, butanone). It has similar solvent properties as acetone but is less volatile.

Yep. Learned of the "mix" from a Brit when I was in Germany.

One of their Phantoms broke at Bitburg AB and I had F-4 experience, so I got asked to help.

Guy was trying to remove some bolts and asked if we had any "Weasel Pee".

I asked WTF is it? And he told me acetone and transmission fluid. So off to the paint barn and AGE yard to get the stuff, and away went.

I used that for years until someone told me about Kroil.

Kroil is some great stuff, but sometimes it's faster to make up your own.

Thank you both for this bit of knowledge. I love Kroil and try to keep it on hand, but this is good to know.

I thought this thread would be about the Monkey and the Moonshine Poh-leece.

This thread is officially a disappointment. Big Grin

I would advise against using MEK. Years ago I worked with the stuff cleaning sonar modules in the shipyard. One time, I dropped something in a bucket of MEK. No problem. I was wearing a thick industrial black glove that I was given. It went up to my elbows. I stuck my hand in bucket, felt the cold, got the thing in just a few seconds, but when I pulled my hand out, NO GLOVE! It melted away. Ever since then, i became more careful of the stuff.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." IIRC, "Ed's Red" is a 1:1:1 mix of Acetone, ATF and Mineral Spirits or Kerosine. It was developed as a firearm bore cleaner and lube. I remember seeing it written up in the American Rifleman many years ago
