Meaning the ones that read and translate from text that is scanned.

Any real life anecdotes of when they got it wrong?

Thanks-

In my experience, if you're looking at the written word, most leave it in a poorly translated state. I believe this is partly due to the fact how we write in our native language is imperfect, and translators seem to magnify that.

I use google translate to check my grammar and accenting when writing, and to make sure I haven't gone too far off track. It does help tremendously, but you need to know both languages in order to use it effectively.

the translate app on android works pretty well- my father in law likes to save money and gets medications from Bulgaria sent to his home in the UK. the camera function on that app shows in realtime what the label on the package says. Don't ask about the meds. he hasn't killed himself yet......

They're a good tool, but they do get it wrong (or I should say not perfect) many times.

I use Google Translate when writing emails or penning letters to my in-laws, but I know enough French to know when the translation that google gives me doesn't make sense or isn't exactly right, and I can then quickly correct it. I could write French without it, but with it I can write it much faster. But if I just copied and pasted what google told me, my in-laws would know pretty quickly or think that I don't know what I'm talking about.

In the case of Mandarin Chinese, everything I have seen is just a "ballpark approximation".

You can probably figure out what they are talking about and what they probably mean, but I wouldn't base any important decisions on it. Smile

I think it might depend on the language. But I've found that it's not very good at translating. I think you can get the gist of the meaning from key words but the translation itself is generally not directly usable. At least in my experience with Asian languages.

Google's French is not always synonymous with my wife's French. Of course, some things we say in English don't translate literally into French, and vice versa.

I write something in English, submit it to online translation, get the French version and show it to her, with mixed results.

She is often told in France that she speaks French really well for an American! Big Grin

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

A good example of source material. No clue what it says, my guess is it's humorous.

It's a hit and miss depending on how grammatically correct the original language is written. People often use slang or incorrect grammar or idiomatic expressions that the translation engine doesn't get.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I've never found a suitable translator for Klingon. Some get it almost right, buy not quite.
