I have a tendency to "collect" things that have a connection to my life. Some of these things came from malls which no longer exist where I spent time years ago.
I acquired this flagpole from the now demolished Chesterfield Mall. I timed everything so that today would be the first day it flew a flag at its new home.
The pole is original to the mall which opened September 1, 1976. The first image in the video goes back to 2007, with the remainder of the images showing some of the removal and reinstallation process.

I dug it with a decent sized excavator that I was using to clear some brush with. The plan was for a 4' cube, but I over dug it due to the size of the machine to a roughly 5' cube.
Fun fact I didn't realize at the time. A 5' cube has roughly twice the volume as a 4' cube. 4.5 yards of concrete.

Pole is considered a 40 foot (above ground), and is 44 foot total for the aluminum pole, and about another foot for the truck and finial. Despite its size, it's relatively light. I estimated roughly 300 pounds.
The truck is a double revolving with two independent halyards and cleats on opposing sides.
The pole tapers but is 8 inches in diameter at the base and sits in a 12 inch diameter sleeve a little over 4 foot deep. I built the sleeve myself and was able to overdo it to make my life easier. The lightning spike is much longer and larger diameter than needed, and I let it protrude into the sleeve 10 inches or so. I then welded some flat stock from the end of that to the base plate the sleeve was welded to build a pyramid. This allowed the pole to slide over that and self-center when we dropped it in.
We leveled the pole with a 6' level using wood wedges to hold it in place. After level we filled the sleeve with sand and used a polymer sealant to cover the sand once complete.
I bought the largest flag recommended for a 40 foot pole, which is an 8x12. The pole and flag look "normal" sized in photos until you look at somebody standing next to it.

Everybody told me it was a bit overkill for a flagpole, but I told them it would give archeologists something to ponder when they find it 1,000 years from now.
