This is my wife’s (and my) preference. I wasn’t going to drive from Arizona to Florida and back. This is where I have to just accept the flight.

Agreed. There's nowhere in the lower 48 that I'd opt to fly over driving to, for exactly the reasons you listed. Plus if I'm driving my own car I have the flexibility of my own transportation when I get where I'm going, too. We live near the middle of the country, so there's pretty much nowhere I couldn't get to in two days if I had to, especially if I had a second driver.
We recently flew to Alaska, and thankfully got lucky and had pretty pleasant flights the whole trip. Ironically, that's one place where the gun thing is easier if you fly than if you drive, because Canadians are stupid. The vehicle situation when we got there would have been better if I could have driven my own, though. If my work vacation situation had allowed for the extra 6-10 days to drive, I'd have have opted to do that.
