Sounds to me like it's a good opportunity to get a really cheap vacation.

Online rates have not dropped yet. It would be fun to call and mess with the front desk. Howard Stern used to do stuff like that.

It capitalism at work. Those two countries have pretty much zero resources mostly AG products. They sell what they have that is most valuable. People from the world around are willing to trade their hard earned wages for the ocean, luxury and weather. These resorts then need people to staff and maintain their properties lifting some of those farmers and textile workers into a higher class, those people then buy stuff from their neighbors shops and services lifting those people economically. The shops and service company owners may be able to buy more things lifting yet another person up the poverty ladder. Also those resorts need to be built and utilities brought to them, that's hundreds and hundreds more jobs.

If you are any kind of humanitarian then you should elect to vacation there and help upgrade them from shacks and poverty.

Good place for a Democratic fund raiser. Jimmy 123 could ferry them from South Florida.

I’d guess that HGTV’s Caribbean Life House Hunters program just took a ratings hit for any DR related programming. Eek

I don't have enough free days or dollars to even scratch the surface of the US and Canada. I have no desire to travel to third world countries or even the over-visited sites in Europe.

Over 6 million people visit the DR annually. What the hell is everyone going on about? Seriously. 10 deaths?

Have we not learned anything when it comes to the media? We don't even have any real facts surrounding these deaths. What we have is every pretend professional giving his opinion.

I've never had any intention of visiting the Dominican Republic and still don't, but it has absolutely nothing to do with this hyped up, media provocation.

I would like to know the nationalities of those “6,000,000” visitors every year. I bet millions are from right next door.

It’s 10 AMERICANS that have died in what, 2 weeks?

10 random people dying over the course of a year is 1 thing. 10 Americnans dying from unknown reasons in the last 2 weeks is entirely different.

It is entirely possible someone in DR is currently targeting & poisoning Americans. Draw your own conclusions.

Add another one...again deadly results after having a drink! I think a lot of us celebrate a vacation trip with a drink, but not expecting to drop to the ground immediately after having one.

There is crime everywhere. This is concerning since Belize is a favorite fishing and diving spot for many Americans. Here is the story:

AN PEDRO, Belize - A Roanoke doctor and his tour guide were found murdered in San Pedro, Belize, Sunday, according to officials with Carilion Clinic. Swank's neighbors in Roanoke County say the avid angler was on vacation with his wife and school aged children when it happened.

Gary Swank, 53, was a cardiologist at Carilion Clinic and was on a fly fishing expedition. He had just recently been promoted to associate professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

10 News has been unsuccessful in its attempts to reach the United States Consulate in Belize, or the local authorities. But, authorities in Belize tell the San Pedro Sun that he was found floating face down in a lagoon with several gunshot wounds. Mario Graniel, 53, a well-known local Belizian tour guide, was also found dead in the boat with several gunshot wounds.

Authorities tell the San Pedro Sun that they believe Graniel was the target of the shooting because officers were called to his home Saturday after an unknown gunman fired shots outside his apartment complex.

A friend lives in the Dominican Republic. He has property there, and likes it. Inexpensive.

I've not been overly impressed by my time in Dominican, but it's a lot better than Haiti.

A few years ago on a trip to the DR I was in a hotel and given a room on the other side of the road. As I walked to my room, I was met by a man with a shotgun who was supposed to escort me to my room.

Back on the beach side, I saw a hot tub marked off with caution tape and a small sign that warned that the tub was quarantined due to "flesh eating virus."

What's happening in the Dominican isn't new, isn't really all that dramatic, and is playing for news...just another day.
