washer / washing machine shopping
When our washer died the wife mentioned how she'd really like a wringer washer. I found an old Speed Queen and she is overjoyed with it.

I realize nobody else leans that way, but I thought I'd mention it.

She insists clothes get cleaner in a wringer and she says it's relaxing for her to do laundry that way.

Ours is a 60's model, but it turns out they are still made in Saudi Arabia for limited water areas. I also have a Maytag I'm refurbishing and spare parts are available still from an Amish supply store.

I can second the motion for Whirlpool front load machines. I know nothing about top loaders now.

Yes to the above brands (especially Whirlpool), NO!! to LG and Samsung.

Those 3 brands are all the same. PArts are interchangeable. Ie Whirlpool part are the OEM for Maytag.

I believe you may find the parts in Kenmore an LG are the same.

My LG front loader finally died. The bearing seized and caused the board to fry. The washer was a 2001 model. We replaced it with a steam model.

The 2001 dryer has had only one issue (twice). One of the roller bearings failed. $60 later and 90 minutes later - four new rollers, new idler and spring, and new belt.

About 3 yrs ago I bought Speed Queen analog w/d based on the advice of this forum. Love them. Always buy Whirlpool in other appliances.

We had a Whirlpool Duet set, the washer went out immediately after the warranty expired. They said the part that failed would be more to replace than a new washer. We replaced it with another Whirlpool Duet and have had numerous failures on it both in and out of warranty. Never again.

If you bought in 2004 that lasted a long time.

We had pretty red Samsung front loaders come with the house we most recently bought. Looked great, worked fine, but I do most of the laundry and used two settings out of the 30+ combinations available.

When a seal gave out on the washer at about the 10 year mark it was more cost effective to replace than repair.

Went with the least expensive name brand I could find, with the fewest buttons... a top loading Whirlpool, cost $450, about the cost to repair the Samsung.

Of the 12 plus wash combinations available I again use two.

When the dryer gives up the ghost, we’ll replace it with something equally basic.

Kenmore was just rebranded manufacture. My kenmore dryer uses whirlpool. Soo depending on the manufacturer code, kenmore can be almost anything. I have seen parts that are common across many brands. Aftermarket drain pump fits whirlpool and lg and...

I don't know how accurate this is, but I've been told that washers and dryers made in Canada and Mexico don't have these silly regulations our American made ones do.

If this is true, I wonder about buying in Canada or Mexico and if you could bring it back across the border?

And by silly regulations, I mean the water saving and energy saving features that the EPA has heaped upon us and making machines more troublesome.

Just a thought and a question.

We had the earlier version of the LG Mega Washer Dryer and put that through its paces for 10 years. We recently upgraded to the new LG “mega” front load combo and are impressed. Very reliable, good value.

That experience was not so good. We had lots of problems and replace circuit boards in both the washer and dryer after they were about 5 years old.
While walking around the washers, I shied away from the push button controls, and stuck with dial controls.

That 20 years is impressive.

Taking delivery Sunday 6/14. Went with Maytag.

We have been delighted with the Maytag front loaders we bought from HD about 3 years ago. They function flawlessly; front loaders are easier on the clothes; the dryer gets things dry without overheating clothes.

We've had a couple of Whirlpool front loaders that were highly rated by the consumer magazines. They both lasted 5-6 years. That's an awefully short timespan, in my opinion, for appliances that cost $1,200 - $1,400. Got sick of that and went with the Speedqueen. It's only been a couple of years so far, but they've worked well. Only time will tell whether they really outlast the Whirlpools.

Your unit lasted 16 years. That is outstanding for a washer.

They don't make 'em like they used to... Big Grin

Mom bought a Maytag washer in 1959 for our family of 6 when we moved into our new house. Several years later she bought a nearly new set for a good deal and my older brother took it. After that I got it. I finally bought a matched set to appease the wifey and we gave it away. It out lived all the units that replaced it. There was a new belt or two and one tub seal, that I was able to change myself, but it was in constant use for over thirty years.

Endeavor to persevere.

What ever you do don't buy a Samsung, I repeat, do NOT by a Samsung, they are junk. Great TV's but not worth even a look in the stores...

The original Whirlpool we had lasted about 12 years but the latest one we bought from Maytag (top loader) died after 3.5 years. By the time I had someone come out and diagnose what was wrong and have them fix it, I was more than half way into a new one. We recently bought a GE and I bought an extended warranty. Hopefully I won't have to use it but after the Maytag issue(s), I figured for the few extra dollars it couldn't hurt. Any appliance now cannot compare to the quality of the older ones/models, in my opinion.

We had a Maytag Neptune that worked well and lasted longer than expected (but had to replace the control board once; or maybe I fixed it by replacing a diode or something. I forget).

I was considering a SQ or Whirlpool/Maytag but the latter had the door hinge on the wrong side and wasn't swappable. Went with SQ and while expensive, there have been no regrets for day to day use. The only detraction is size - for king size comforters, I need to go to a laundromat. Which is okay since it's an annual thing and those machines are huge - probably cleans better.

I’ve been waiting for my Samsung’s to die, bought them because it’s what I could afford at the time, they’ve been horrible in all aspects. (Never again) The drier is finally unreliable. They will be getting replaced with a Miele set that sit unused (now) at my parents house. I was going Speed Queen if my brother didn’t suggest taking mom and dads set

I initially got a top loading Maytag, then noticed it was an agitator, so I changed my order to a Whirlpool impeller (less wear and tear on clothes than the agitator). I would have got a front loader if they had one with a depth of 27" or thereabouts - 31-32" would stick out too far.

Delivered yesterday, earlier than expected, which was nice. My wife gets these free bottles of wine and starbucks coffees in bottles so they got a couple of both and a tip.

I'll religiously hold back zippered items to their own load. Use more water than needed (except when bleaching pillowcases in hot water) to give everything plenty of room. And never pack the machine.
