Can anyone identify this grass?
Have this tough grass/weed around and was just wondering what it is? It has a tough stalk with a feathery top.

I'm gonna guess Rye....but, I'm new at lawn care so, I'll defer to those in-the-know.

Rye sounds like a good guess.

How tall is it?

Well it’s not a rye grass. WV is far from the part of the country where I studied and worked, but with a bit more information, I’ll bet the Forum can figure it out. Do you understand “cool season” vs. “warm season” grasses and plants? Out here, where I am, the warm season grasses haven’t even completely greened up, let alone gone reproductive. Is it a cool season grass? Is it a perennial, or annual, i.e. can you easily pull it out roots and all? I’ve got lots of books, but I need more information.

I'll ask too. How tall is it? I can't see the pics but if it's 5 to 6 foot, I'll guess Johnson grass. Just a wild ass guess.

Yorkshire fog velvetgrass.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

It's Johnson grass.

I’m gonna go with Genorogers… that’s what we always called Hohnson grass, not sure if that’s exactly what it is but it’s what we always referred it as…

Amber waves of grain. Now you have need for a brand new Zero turn.

Who knew how complicated this could be? Does it have a short, hairy ligule?

My guess: reed canary grass which makes the Dirty Dozen list of invasive plants in West Virginia.

In the pic it's probably 8-10" tall.

Thanks, I looked up and you may be right but while the top tuft looks like Yorkshire, the stalk on this grass appears much thicker and tougher? I'll go over and get a closer image with something for reference later.

Maybe but I don't believe it's Johnson grass for the same reason.

I started to reply my zero turn is new, but just thinking here it's 8 years old..... I hate to think what a new one like it'd cost now!

I see stems and seeds, so it’s clearly not Acapulco Gold.

This. Use the app "picture this", plant id app. works great. use it all the time to identify plant life in my area. just use the free version. using it for years and no issues.

took photo of photo in this thread and identified immediately.
