So I'm planning a trip to Dallas TX this spring. We will be going to the Kay Bailey Hutchinson convention center. I'm looking for an area to book a room for a few nights. What area around downtown should I avoid looking to stay in? Are there any areas near downtown anyone local can suggest? | ||

Check out the Magnolia. Usually has good rates. It’s downtown, a block off main. Also the Springhill suites is pretty good. Two blocks from dealey plaza. ______________________________________________ Life is short. It’s shorter with the wrong gun… | |||

X2 on the budget because the Omni is right by the convention center but it’s $$. I would avoid anything by the farmers market because of all the homeless, although there are homeless all over downtown. | |||

Max $200 a night. Being downtown by the convention center isn't the highest priority for this trip so we are not against having to commute a little ways for the piece of mind of decent comfortable lodging . | |||

I would look at downtown Dallas and find a hotel going north from downtown. If you’re staying over a weekend you might find something downtown cheap as downtown Dallas is mostly business travelers. We booked a room at the Adolphus a few years ago at about $150 because timing was right. Going north of the downtown loop is the trendy area of Dallas. Great night life but pricey. Hotel Zaza or the Rosewood Crescent would be fantastic but a quick look shows they’re at about $250 a night- look for a sale. The Stoneleigh is great too but they’ve gotten pricey since they sold out to Starwood Hotels a few years ago. Going up the Dallas north tollway there are a few options in the Addison area that would work. If you’re driving in you will receive a bill for the tolls 6 months after your trip. The rental car companies will get you for an extra fee to process the toll. | |||

Downtown: Magnolia 10 minutes North of Downtown: Park Cities Hilton Lived in Dal last 18 years. Although no longer there, I still keep an office downtown. And I stay @ the Hilton Park Cities when in town. Concur on the Magnolia Hotel. Nice hotel. Also, the Adolphus on Commerce (actually next door to the Magnolia) is a charming old holtel. Both are a five minute walk past the "iron cows" to the Convention Center. Next door to the Center is the new Omni; and the Hyatt At Reunion is close also. We trudge on. | |||

Be careful as you head north on 35. I wouldn’t stay anywhere north of mockingbird on 35. 75 is a different story the farther north on 75 it’s generally better the farther north. | |||

Dallas native, lived in greater DFW 58 years. IMHO, I would never walk after 6pm anywhere in downtown Dallas. I would not stay in downtown Dallas unless I had to. Magnolia and Park Cities as mentioned are good bets, but $200/night may limit you, so look for deals. If you’re bringing kids, you’ll want to look much further from downtown. Had to spend about two weeks working in Dallas. We had to stay in Oak Cliff. I can positively say to stay away from that area. | |||
