Why close the post office, if there is a security concern with using the telescope to spy on improper areas?

And no alien bullshit responses, please.

Please explain to me how a ground-based Solar telescope could be aimed at another point of the ground--it can only look upward. I suppose there is a remote possibility that it could be set to spy on a satellite, but it's not designed to track anything that moves that fast.

Oh hell I quite concur. You did notice my big assed toothy grin emoticon right? Smile The spin factories have been on overtime generating wild and wacky theories about what has been going on.

All joking aside, I think this has nothing to do with security or espionage. My guess it is just a contract issue. While the observatory is federally funded it is actually run by a consortium of university scientific groups called AURA. From what I have read the contract with AURA is not being renewed and a new scientific group will run the observatory. The government decided they didn't want the employees from AURA sticking around during the transition because of possible intellectual property theft or maybe mischief by disgruntled people losing their job. So the govt is just shutting the place down during the switch over.

The people were forced out of the homes because they are govt property and are only for the use of people working at the facility. The post office closed because its only purpose is mail coming into and out of the observatory. I think the govt was surprised by all the attention this has gotten so they just spouted the standby "ongoing security issue" in an attempt to shut down any pesky questions. With all the people showing up and taking youtube videos of the abandoned site the security line was looking like a bogus excuse so they have now sent some security guards out there to at least make it look like there is a security concern. Of course this could be all wrong.

Thank you, Fundman, for that. I was interested in this incident and had to keep coming back here in hopes of more information. Yours are the first meaningful comments in the thread, and even if you’re totally wrong that was a refreshing change.

Yes, I noticed the grin, but I didn't interpret it the way you intended, I guess. We really need to get the facepalm Smiley back.
