So they have monitors who can shut down conservative "hate speech" but nobody can monitor bogus sales ad's on their site aimed at technology challenged seniors. After seeing multiple ads my elderly mother decided that the six piece outdoor furniture set with matching fire pit was just too irresistible at $58.95.
If you are watching over aging parents take note. They are doing fuck all nothing to root out bogus ad's.
Spent a couple of hours cleaning up the credit card mess.
Fuck Facebook.

I know that this is beating a dead horse, but why anyone belongs to that outfit is a mystery to me.

It represents and exploits the worst qualities of society and people just keep feeding it.

It boggles the mind.

Oh trust me I agree 100% and reinforced that opinion for about the 1000th with her.
But it's her lifeline to those in the retirement community and grand/great grand kids.

You could try a pihole ad blocker. Even if the ads come through you can prevent her from loading known fraudulent web sites.

I am on it everyday. It allows me to stay in touch with friends from all over the world, it allows me to connect with friends I haven't seen in years, it allows me to keep up with events that I would otherwise be unaware of. Last July my wife reunited with a friend from high school who she hadn't seen in years. So in that regard, it's good. It's true there are some problems with it. I never engage with anyone in political debates on it as that is a battle you can never win and is pointless and it just causes friends to become enemies and never speak to each other, I don't get my news from it and I don't feed the trolls. I never purchase a product that I see advertised there. If it interests me, I search for their website and go from there. I am aware of the pitfalls of it and act accordingly. It can be a useful tool and I think if you understand what it is, it will be ok.

Do you suppose newspapers do (did?) that for their Classifieds listings? Do you suppose Craig's List does that?

"Elderly mother" suggests a lifetime of experience. She doesn't know better after all those years than to bite on something that looks too good to be true?

There's a lot for which to criticize FB. This isn't one of them. This one's on your mother.

IMO this attitude that "somebody else" is responsible for protecting us from our own bad judgement is one of the major problems with our society today.

Facebook Marketplace is actually quite handy. We sold our power-boat on it. I got a really nice Callaway (golf) driver and a Porter Cable biscuit joiner from FB sellers.

It's like buying anything from anywhere: Caveat emptor.

Btw: I'm pretty sure FB has a mechanism for reporting suspicious adverts to get them whacked.

Facebook Marketplace is one of the two reasons I wish I hadn't felt obliged to cancel my account. (The other is the regular updates from the cat rescue we support.)

Mini-stroke has eroded her judgement. Yes still ultimately her bad decision that I had to spend a couple hours cleaning up.

Until you've spent a few years riding herd on aging parents spare me the lectures please.

And I'm going to stick with my original Fuck Facebook.

Could be but I don't have an account so not up to speed on that. The ad in question was repeated several times over several days. If they made any effort to protect their users. Was not Marketplace just bogus ad postings.
