My son received a 43x for Christmas. He is flying back home and wants to put it in his checked bag. Has anyone used this factory case with a lock around the handle? Seems like it should be ok, just looking to see if anyone has actually done it.

He might get away with it, but unless he’s willing to miss his flight, I’d suggest getting a case with a locking tab. Academy stocks one for $10 and Walmart stocks one that is labeled “TSA Approved” for $15. I wouldn’t personally want to risk it, as the TSA rules say “lockable case”, and the Glock case would be an unlockable case that he managed to get a lock on.

EDIT TO ADD: It’s not about security; it’s about what the gate agent and/or TSA agent thinks.

IIRC you are not supposed to put a TSA approved lock on a firearm.

If you can pry open an edge and get your finger into the box, it won't fly with TSA.

I always use a blue SIG case that has two lock holes. Never an issue. I did see a guy in line behind me get told he could not use the Glock case he had brought. I don't know what happened about that, but I don't think you can just run over to the stores in the airport and find a lockable gun case.

When I took the "knowledge" portion of the FAA exam for ATP (Airline Transport Pilot), they made a point of using NON-TSA locks, and retaining the key; i.e. do NOT hand the key over to anyone. Open the lock if needed, but keep the key in your possession.

I recommend printing hard copies of both FAA regs and the airline policy, and having them with you at check-in, in the event that you encounter an agent who does not know the rules. If FAA regs and airline policy disagree, whichever is more restrictive is the one that takes priority.

I've use the blue sig case with two locks as well.

Here's a $13 one at Harbor Freight that should work with properly sized locks: link. When locked, the lock's shackle needs to be short enough to keep the case closed.

I take the slide off and if possible put it in another bag or at least hide it in one of the pockets of the suitcase. Seems to make ticket agents feel better to see only a frame.

I like those travel cases that are steel clamshell with a cable like a nanovault or lockdown theyre handy just to lock your wallet in or such while traveling or at the beach too. The run from like 30 bucks to 100ish and it's worth having one.

This is bad advice.

Follow TSA instructions and you will be fine.

Unless it's one of these, the TSA won't let you fly without the case being locked.
