Yeah, that M14 video guy... |
I have all the content in linkedin. My first job was the USMC and I was contacted by a headhunter which led to my first civilian job. While I was employed with them, I met my new boss in the gym and he casually asked me if I wanted to work for him. So my first two civilian jobs found me which accounts for 20 years of employment. I now find myself actively looking for a job for the first time. I still have my job, but we're officially 1 year out from our plan to move from OR to FL, so I need to start applying for jobs. I'm actually thinking of applying to Knight's Armament for their research and development engineer spot. The requirements for that job almost perfectly match my skillset and experience. I find it hard to even think of putting my relevant experiences down on 1 sheet of paper. Anyone know of a good template? I've found that resume formats vary widely by the industry. I'm not familiar with the appropriate format for the firearms industry. In my lines, 2-3 page resumes are typical, and a 4-5 page CV is also common. You can't get your relevant education in a single page, even single-spaced. Perhaps others here will have better answers...but do you really need to stick to a single page these days? Isn't that for entry-level positions mostly? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The trouble with our Liberal friends...is not that they're ignorant, it's just that they know so much that isn't so." I found an older single page I used as an abbreviated resume for an aviation-related bid proposal. If you'd like, I can email you the word document. You are welcome to use the format if you like it. Say the word, and I'll email it to you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The trouble with our Liberal friends...is not that they're ignorant, it's just that they know so much that isn't so." Email just left the outbox... I threw in a couple other multi-page resumes we've used for other purposes. I hope one of the formats will help. I was looking for my old military resume, if I find it I'll forward. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The trouble with our Liberal friends...is not that they're ignorant, it's just that they know so much that isn't so." Their site shows 24 positions just now. Hard to say what they will need in a year. You should just pick up, pack up and go. Summer is near and its time..

We're heavily leaning to FL. I'll be exploring the firearms industry, the aviation industry and tech industry, as that's where all my talent lies. My wife is an OR nurse at a level 1 trauma hospital. Tony, My wife spent her career in HR often recruiting. Several times she helped friends "tweak" their resumes. Now she's a bit of a perfectionist but she always ended up spending considerable time doing it. I tell you this to remind those in your position that this is a fairly significant ask. Especially to get it done right. I'd recommend getting it as good as you can with the resources offered above. Then take that product to someone who is currently doing them "professionally" closer to your need date. Resume formats tend to evolve a bit and you want a current format.

Don't worry about keeping to one page. Try to give a narrative on the work history. Also keep in mind that if you are going to use any job sites that recruiters do key word searches so keep that in mind. Example if you were in information technology find a way to use DELL Servers, CISCO switches, EMC VNX storage arrays, Networker backup software. Most folks I see just do servers, switches, storage and backup software. If a company is looking for a candidate that has Cisco and EMC backgrounds you may get missed if you don't use key words. Good Luck. I just had to update mine after 10 years at same place. I did staffing in the late 1990's for Y2K. Also back in the day I would see military resumes that just listed the branch and unit specs. Communications Specialist 1999 - 2011 Fort Knox, KY Point to point comms. Most Civilians don't understand military jargon so make sure you tweak it with what I mentioned above and geek out a bit like this... Communications Specialist 1999 -2011 Worked on Multiple Microwave and Laser communications set ups. I learned to connect at 22 Gig per second and 75 Gig per second coms over 17 miles. Familiar with Cisco M200 and MT400 systems while connecting to HDMI-6 HD. Also familiar with Hughes F700 Satellites over broadband and FRS channels. Managed a team of 6 other members of the communications team. I was in charge of training and promotions for the last 6 years. Very flexible when it comes to travel I have worked in 6 states and 2 countries in the last five years. Certified on fixing control panels and trouble shooting under pressure the FM500 General Electric control systems. In summer of 1998 I was in charge of a team to take down 34 communication towers in 75 days and upgrade another 14 AT&T towers. Experienced with working a project plan and making sure jobs stayed with in timelines and budgets. I worked on six projects over the last 5 years that were $5.6 Million through EDS systems. You kind of get the idea........... I hope it helps. Good Luck.... NRA Life Member

It's not the format that will very as much as the industry buzzwords. Most HR and headhunters use LinkedIn and the other major job boards. I am a Tech consultant always looking for my next contract or full time position. I get contacted mostly from LinkedIn followed by Indeed and sometimes by Dice, monster and CareerBuilder. You should have your resume posted on a many related boards as you can find. If you have a clearance, Clearance Jobs is always a very good place to post. You need to make sure you resume will scan through an automated ATS system. Check out jobscan.co it will format your resume for free to get it through the automated ATS system. The good news is the last two weeks I have seen a major uptick in calls for work. Covid really killed off the hiring for a while. Once you post your resume be prepared to get many calls from India some of the people can barely speak English. About half the jobs I get are from these people. VOIP service make the calls appear to be from the US. If you can fit your resume on 2 pages it is preferred. If you are looking for an executive position, look for a resume writing pro in your area. It is not only the resume but there contacts in industry can really help. If you have any other questions my email is in my profile.
