Biolite (smokeless) firepit... thoughts Login/Join

I am looking at alternatives to the Solostove style smokeless firepits. I came across the Biolite firepit and im very interested. I like the open design and feel it would radiate more heat than the Solostove style which seems to direct heat straight up. The Biolite uses a fan and pumps air into the fire.

I can get the Biolite for $160 from a members discount site.

Does anyone have any input or reviews?

Have the Solo and it does radiate a lot of heat and like all fires, much of it goes straight up.

They do have a deflector that goes on top to help radiate heat, been thinking about getting that to see if it works.

That looks pretty nice, with the fan to keep the fire burning and the open sides.

I picked up one of the original Biolite campstoves about 10-12 years ago and have used it a number of times. It’s pretty handy as it generates electricity to charge your phone or whatever. Started a thread here on it back then, but it’s probably been pruned by now.

Have a friend with that, his range report was it directs SOME heat to the side, but thermodynamics being what they are it's still going straight the heck up a the edges, just with slightly more velocity.

The Biolite is interesting, but wonder how durable that design is. Our Solos have been bulletproof.

We have a great friend who wanted a burn pit but was never going to spend this sort of money. He has found that repurposing discarded washer drums works a charm. he had a stainless one when we last visited him and it was like a small thermonuclear reactor. WAY more radiant heat than our large solo.

He gets them at parts recycler/repair shops for free-$25. It ain't pretty but man it works.

Does it actually generate electricity? The one that's linked looks like it has a battery pack for the fans, but no generation capability.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Mine does, yeah. I haven’t looked at the new ones though.

The camp stove mentioned and the firepit are totally different. I believe the camp stove is self charging, the fire pit is battery powered.
