Seeing a tv program where civil war artifacts were auctioned for $500k, I wonder where I might find true value for a field manual I have from that era.

ebay ,

search completed auctions, (advanced, and click the sold icon)

that would be a start,

you can also look at bookfinder.com, abebook.com , alibris.com or Addall.com (all pull from the same group) and check to see what folks are asking for it

I have dealt with this guy a few times and he has been very fair.

I know he talks about buying dug items, but he might be interested, or be able to give you some guidance.

forget eBay

go to a CW web site and find a local historian or artifact collector

you wanted to know the 'true' value of something, not an eBay fantasy number

Jackson Armory in Dallas, TX might be another. In addition to firearms, they have quite a collection of books.

You might want to check with Turner Kirkland at Dixie Gun Works in Union City, TN, also. He should at least be able to give you some good leads to pursue.

Mr Kirkland died in 1997.

But DGW is still a good place to contact.

Nice guy, I hate to hear that. We left Union City in the summer of '61 and I've had no occasion to be around or deal with him since.
