Some of the better know services do not have actual scientists reviewing the data but rely on software packages alone for making determinations. YMMV

Thanks for that, my daughters results from 23 and me make more sense after reading your post. Her results didn’t make much sense.

To attach to a historical person They can take a known genealogy created the traditional way (birth records, the census etc.) And use the DNA from the established descendant.
This is especially helpful in cases where there are no records or they were lost in a fire. Now using DNA they can connect the dots and reestablish the genealogy.

there is a show on PBS called finding your roots with that Gates guy, I wonder who they use for their DNA junk.

and another thing

I wonder if people should be leaving hair samples ,
in a family box somewhere , so g,g,g,great grand people will be able to trace lineage back, for posterity

Hair samples might be a good idea. Tubes of spit might be less so.

Can you get DNA from the external hair? I thought you had to get the follicle. Hair could be matched to a known example.

One of my paternal cousins has been doing family genealogy for a few years, and has found some lines going back more than 1,000 years. One of those lines shows a descendency from Rollo, the first Viking king of Normandy. Only it's 43 generations back, and actually through the concubine of one of his great-grandsons. So I wonder how that will be shown, even if at all. I just did 23andMe and am awaiting the results. Supposedly there is Native American in my heritage, so I'll see how that shows up as well. I fully expect to have majority of German and English Isles since that was the mix for the more recent generations.

You simply contact them and they send you a cotton swab (inside your cheek) and you send it back.
They don't know it's you or not.
Now__putting that stick with the end wrapped in cottotton is someone else's cheek???? best of luck with that.

I did this recently. The locations stuff really just confirmed what I already knew. The biggest surprises were:

1. Definitely no Indians. I did not find any in my past research yet looks and family stories suggested otherwise.

2. I have a lot of cousins that have submitted AncestryDNA.

It's pretty cool that a lot of close cousins have done this. I had no idea they had. What it helps with is giving you a direction as to how you are related to the really distant DNA matches.

Our kids gave us the ancestry spit as a Christmas gift. Roughly my wife is 1/4 Iberian/Southern Med, 1/4 Native American, 1/2 European, which matches her parents known lines (her mom is from Peru, fam tradition was her mom was half Inca and half Spanish). I am 1/4 Scandavian, 1/4 Celtic, 1/2 European, which matches my grandparents heritage.
