Seeing egregore's pic of a drop light brought back some memories of knocking one loose under a car more than once and those damn things got real hot and always landed on me. On the other hand I have slowly been replacing incandescents with leds, but I have not been pleased. I thought leds would last longer but that has not been my experience with the 110v 60w bulbs.

Heck... I've been installing kerosene lamps. May as well get a heat benefit. I like the light it puts off also.

My experience with LEDs is twofold. First, they don't last nearly as long as those pushing them claim they do. Yeah they last longer than incandescent bulbs, but it's for sure not the huge difference that is claimed. Given the higher price of LEDs I have serious doubts about the economics of it.

Second, LEDs generate RF noise that can interfere with some electronic devices and indoor OTA TV antennas. I've got a 3-way lamp in my living room and when I replaced the old incandescent bulb in it with an LED, my OTA reception with completely to hell. I was lucky enough to find a source of incandescent 3-way bulbs online, and bought enough to last me at least 10 years.

My plan is to buy up all the incandescent bulbs and sell them to forum members in the classified section in 2029. Big Grin

Heat is the enemy of LED longevity; I have yet to use a comparably bright LED light bulb that doesn’t incorporate a very heavy aluminum heat sink (read expensive) that lasts anywhere near what manufacturers claim and certainly not as long as some incandescent bulbs I’ve had.
