The airport for MQT (formerly K.I. Sawyer AFB) is quite small, as are most Yoop airports. The walk from the jet way to the parking lot is about 100 feet.

I live about a mile and a half away from a small municipal airport named Felts Field outside of Spokane that has a very good cafe called the Skyway Cafe that has very good food and we have breakfast there occasionally. Its fun to go and watch the business arrivals while eating.

Mrs Sigmund loves to join me in the 152 or 172, as long as there's food involved. On airport restaurants are scarce around here, but if you call ahead most GA fields have a crew car that'll get you into town.

It used to be the home base for the old Ford Tri-motors that serviced the Lake Erie Islands.
It also has a decent museum that has lots of WW 2 focus as well as the airport history.
There are two WW 2 PT boats on site. One was in the stages of reconstruction when I last toured the museum. It is in a back hanger that also houses a large area dedicated to PT 109. Leonard J Thom, executive officer of PT 109, was from nearby Sandusky, Ohio. His family donated quite a bit of memorabilia from his navy service and from his involvement in the making of the movie.
If you are ever in that area it is well worth a stop.

This maybe our winner.
My family’s fruit farm was in Vermillion so it’s possible this was the airport that my Uncle utilized.
We would likely be able to fly over the old family farm.

There are lots of small airports around here. Most are much smaller than the airport in "Wings". It is very rare to have scheduled airline service. Or a restaurant.

Our hometown airport was built in 1942 with a 6,000 foot concrete runway to support flight operations out of Norfolk Naval Airstation. It was deeded to the county in the 1950s. There is a terminal building and about 30 hangars serving private pilots, air taxis and crop dusters. No restaurant. The Navy also uses it now for helicopter training flights.

A similar runway was constructed 30 miles north at Wallops Island, VA. It is now a NASA base for rocket launches, and a major employer in the area. My next-door neighbor is a rocket technician. The Navy developed the Aegis missile system there. I don't think it is open to civil aircraft.

The closest thing to "Wings" in the area is the Sussex County Airport in Georgetown, DE. They have a restaurant!

KDMW (Carroll County Regional airport) is in Westminster, MD
No restaurant on the premises, but you could walk to a Subway or DQ. Short taxi ride to a lot of restaurants.

Also, Gettysburg Battlefield is about a half hour north.

They also have a couple of WW2 aircraft based there. We accidentally attended a large WW2 re-enactment a couple years ago.

In 1957, after completing the training course at the U.S. Navy's Guided Missile School at Dam Neck VA, my first duty station was with a missile squadron based at NAS (Naval Air Station) Chincoteague VA. The last time that I flew over that area, I looked down at it, then glanced at the navigation chart and realized that the old NAS Chincoteague had been re-named; the new name was NASA Wallops Island Test Facility. Is that the one that you're referring to?

The small airport in Dyersburg Tennessee had a small restaurant that closed recently but in the restaurant building is the phone booth and phone that Patsy Cline used to make a call before getting on the plane that crashed.

If you have ever driven I5 from La to Nor cal you have driven past Coalinga and Harris Ranch. You can’t miss that smell. There is a small airport at the restaurant and I know multiple people who have flown to Harris ranch had steak lunch or dinner at the nice restaurant and flown back to Bay Area or Sacramento

It's been a few years, but I was scheduled to fly to Mountain Home, Arkansas.

To get there, I flew into St. Louis and transferred to a 12 passenger prop plane. The plane had a couple of other passengers and we made 2 or 3 stops at small airports to let them off.

When we got over Mountain Home, weather conditions didn't allow us to land and the plane diverted to a tiny airport about 50 miles from Mountain Home. The "airport" was essentially a landing strip next to a residential house that served as the "terminal". There was only one person working there and he multi-tasked. He was the baggage handler, gate agent, air traffic controller, and airport manager. Smile

I had to get a cab from there to Mountain Home and arrived a couple of hours late, but it was a very interesting experience.

Sikeston Missouri. Fly in, call the Lambert's cafe. They will come out to the airport, pick you up, and walk you into the restaurant past the waiting line. Then they will take you back to the airport after you're done eating.

At least they used to when I was in College. We were all building flight time, so we would load up 3-4 airplanes and fly over in a big group. It was always a blast.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

There are two here in Central Florida that I just remembered.

  • Chalet Suzanne. This is a restaurant with a great menu. They have a turf (un-paved) runway, 2,300' to accommodate fly-in diners. If you want to accompany the food with some wine, there is overnight lodging available and you can depart after breakfast.

  • River Ranch. This is a Bed & Breakfast(?) Hotel with Restaurant(?) -- not sure how to classify it. It's been a while, I think that I remember a campground on the property, too. Larger runway than Chalet Suzanne. My wife and I flew in a couple of times, maybe 30 years ago, for a meal. The BMWMOA (BMW Motorcyle Owners of America) had one of their national rallies there, also around 30 years ago.
The Playboy Club in Lake Geneva WI had a turf runway. I flew in there a couple times, once on sort of business, once to eat and drink (my wife had previously agreed to be the "designated driver" for the trip home so I could have couple drinks), must have been late 1960's.

Truckee Tahoe Airport in Truckee, CA resembles your classic small-town airport. There's no regular passenger service however lots of general aviation and company flights, military and firefighting aircraft are not unusual. The terminal is a contemporary build so, doesn't have the character of older locations mentioned by other posters. Food concession is a draw and not unusual for most people to come grab lunch or, bring the kids to watch airplanes.

    Chalet Suzanne

On July 10, 2014, it was announced that with the retirement of the Hinshaw family, the Chalet would close on or about August 4. The business and property are up for sale as a result.[5] As of May 2016, current owners Eric and Dee Hinshaw have turned down offers from property developers who wanted to build houses, hoping that someone with a "grand vision for the property" will purchase it.[6]

    Link

When faced with the changing times and a booming housing market, the restaurant’s signature clientele and exclusive atmosphere dwindled. In 2014, Carl Jr.’s son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Dee Hinshaw, announced that Chalet Suzanne would be closing its doors.

Today, the Hinshaws retain most of the property with the exception of some parcels that were sold at auction in 2014. The former chalet is now known as Refuge on the Ridge, a drug + alcohol rehabilitation center.

Locals still remember Chalet Suzanne as a beloved staple of the Polk County community.

In a past life, my old boss had a Beechcraft Bonanza and in the 90s, every now and then during a lull in the day, we would fly it to Carmel Valley to a dirt airstrip in the village there. We would then walk across the road to a cantina/restaurant to eat our "$100 Hamburgers", basically the cost of flying for our lunch.

The airfield was eventually closed and sold maybe 20 years ago.

About 10 miles north of me is Butler Airport.
    http://www.airnav.com/airport/kbtp

My favorite small airport is New Garden Flying Field in Toughkenamon, PA. When I lived in Chester County I would ride my motorcycle to the airfield. I could sit at a picnic bench near the fueling station and see all manner of cool aircraft. https://www.newgardenflyingfield.com/about-n57

Both of those airports are small like the show Wings.

Let me help you out. Which way did you come in?
