Just saw this today. I knew about this basic "shape" of this story, but thought it was one of those stories about wacky WW2 projects that went nowhere, like pigeon guided bombs and the plot to put estrogen in Hitler's tea.

Anyway, seems like an interesting story: Ghost Army of WW2

My Dad has a number of their patches. The story goes they would put these patches on actual Army soldiers and send them into the local town in England on a pass to pubs where they knew German spies would be observing them so they could report back about all these Airborne units massing there when in fact they never existed except on paper:
