SigForum BBQers: What's Your Favorite Charcoal?
Wicked Good and Rockwood for all my cooks. Rockwood allows the smoking wood to be predominate, it is very neutral. I use it for baking also. WG has a bit of flavor but it is quite pleasant. Both burn long and hot with very little ash.

Same here. I use Kingsford. I like that it's consistant in temperature, size, and predictable versus stuff like stubbs.


I use Kingsford professional in the smoker because it burns about 20% longer.

I am trying to move way from Royal Oak as it just isn't as consistent as I would like, size wise. Some bags are great, others are just half flakes and dust.

I've been having much better luck with Wegmann's charcoal. Been treating me quite well.

Publix was garbage, cowboy was too. I tried kingsford once and the amount of ash it created was unbelievable. Briquettes just don't burn hot enough for me.

Becoming less a Royal fan after a couple bags that seemed “damp” and hard to light.

The size is all over the place. I have some real big pieces and some tiny ones. So far it hasn't been an issue since there is enough of a mix but I kinda wondered if it was possible to get a bag with more one than the other. I think I am going to try Stubbs next.

I can no longer do this because of supplemental O2, but when I could, I bought mesquite in 50 lb bags from a dealer in Escondido north of San Diego.

I understand Aaron Franklin doesn’t but genuine Texas barbeque used mesquite, probably because it was plentiful around here and a pest.

Correct, Mesquite was easy to get and plentiful. Aaron uses post oak, a milder smoke wood than mesquite.

For lump charcoal I use Primo Lump, pretty consistent and I get good results.

I think they might have stopped making Stubb's. I used up my last bag after the hurricane and had to borrow a bag of Kindsford from my friend. When I went to Lowes to get more it was gone. Not even listed on their site anymore. I think I read that Cowboy made it and I wonder if they didn't like the competition. I bought a bag of Weber from Walmart on clearance and it was excellent. Consistant size, consistant heat, and consistant burn time. And great flavor too. Which is more than I can say for Kngsford BB. That is emergency only after using better quality briquets. I might give the Cowboy briquets a try next time.

Kingsford in my WSM, augmented with chunk wood of most flavors works well for me, Mesquite, Hickory, Apple mostly.
